Hello,

I joined and posted here due to a similar issue I saw, located at http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/485537

My problem is a bit different. I can read disks and burn disks just fine. With exception that SOME dvds simply will not play.

And FYI, when I say "dvds" I am referring to movies, as I rent them every week. The movies I get are new releases, I usually go to the video store Tuesday mornings, so chances are I'm the first customer watching the specific disk that I rent.

From what I've seen, this drive supports the media the movies come on. Yet there are movies that will not play. Ever. And then there are movies that will play. Always. Common sense would lead you to believe that perhaps it's some sort of security on the disk, rumored to prevent playback on PC drives to prevent piracy. Nec CSR's disagree.

But then again, all the CSR's are going about is bogus. First it was an "OS problem", then they said "decoder problem", so I went ahead of sent them my decoder info as well as requesting a more reliable answer. They never replied back, heh.

Ok, so here's what happens. The disks that do not play, are not detected at all. It is as if there is no disk in the drive. These disks that are not detected are NEVER detected. And as previously mentioned, the others that are, always are.

Disks that are not detected do work fine in my stand-alone DVD player in the living room, as well as the other PC with a Samsung drive. And for the record, I have already flashed my F/W, with both official F/W and also some third-party F/W, I believe from Cdfreaks.

For your amusement, I make a short list of movies that do/not play:

Movies that DO play:
"Ray Charles" (Jamie Foxx)
"Passion of the Christ"
"The Last Mimzy"
"Primeeval"

Movies that do NOT play:
"EarthStorm"
"The Kumite"
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (the 2007 movie)
"Flight of Fury"
"Kings of South Beach" <- Got it release morning. Brand new.

Perhaps someone could find any similarities between these disks.

I do have a tendency to make my posts exceedingly long, for that I apologize. Dunker, if you still own your 3550, I am hoping you might have some ideas here.

Thanks in advance for any information you might come up with. If you require additional information, please feel free to ask. Thanks again.

PS: I just remembered that there have been a FEW disks that simply would NOT play, no matter how many times I tried, however, with "DVD Region Killer" they did run. I have no idea why, as the disks should've been R1, it's a US video store and all... Well, thought I'd share that.
