I'm looking to upgrade my system since problems arose. I would like some advice on what CPU and Motherboard I should grab. It is a gateway 500S/E-3600, the system type is a X86-based pc, version 5.1.2600. Gateway Micro Tower. I'm trying to keep under $350.
In another note my laptop is making a lot of noise I think it is the fan every so often it makes a really loud grinding noise what should I do about that?

Interesting idea although would that be able to play new games and only 2gb of ram thats 1gb less than what my current motherboard can handle. Just to let you know I have never built a computer before.

it would be able to play games if you got a graphics card and did a little overclocking. i have an evga 7600gt. it costs $90 on newegg and i can play most games on high settings. hl2 halo counter strike far cry bioshock fear. and i can even play crysis on low settings. building a computer isnt that hard. i built one for the first time a couple months ago and it was really easy. you just have to read up on it and look through the manuals.
also if you want to play games you would need a little bit better ram

My current faulty mobo is Intel® Desktop Board D845HV it has a 3gb capacity was looking for something similar to that. I do have a nvidia gforce 2 mx 200 not sure how good of a card that is for the newer games.

the motherboard i posted above is a micro atx and should fit in you current case but im not sure. many companies like dell and gateway have thier own motherboard layouts. also a geforce 2 is onboard graphics and isnt good for anything. i think it would be easier to build or buy a new computer because you are still going to have to rebuild your old computer with a new motherboard. so why not build a new computer that is better than your current one. but if you would rather just get the exact same mobo that you have now you can get one on ebay.

krj15489, gforce 2 mx200 is an add on card.
pirate, according to this link that board is a socket 478 which is discontinued & uses pc133 ram not ddr nor ddr2 ram. get new case, board, cpu & ram as you can use your hard drive & rom drives. http://support.intel.com/support/motherb...b/cs-008815.htm

Ok newegg is down atm so I can't view the items, but I have to say this, any computer built with just that little money should not be overclocked, its not smart, because if your buying cheaper items its not the best thing to stress them out. especially with stock cooling.
If your going to be gaming hardcore like, bioshock, you should consider saving up a bit more money, And I would suggest going with Intel, allot of people can say that Amd is great, and I agree that they are for some people, but for people who want to overclock your going to want intel. Ive had problems with every Amd I've ever had, but none with all the Intels I've had.
Since newegg is down I cant show you any good setups, but, once newegg is back up I will post two setups, one for Intel and one for Amd.

i have a amd x2 3600 and it is the kowest end duak=l core amd makes. on a good motherboard i was able to take it from 1.9 to 2.7 and i still use stock cooling because i never changed the voltage and it never goes above 40c.

Here is an Intel setup, I'm not going to bother finding an AMD one for you, his setup is pretty nice, but I will say, you can drop everything but ram, mobo, and cpu and get a faster cpu for that AMD setup.
You are always able to use old harddrives, cd/dvd roms, the case, and anything else you need.
ok here is the Intel setup.
Mobo
The plus about this mother board is that its fast for the price, and its got onboard Video, that way you can hold off on upgrading to pciex16.
CPU
This cpu runs at 2.66 with a l2 cache of 4m shared and a fsb speed of 1333mhz
Ram
The ram has a cas lat of 4, which is pretty nice, and is from a known brand.
I went a little over on the price, but only by like 20 bucks I think.
You can always downgrade in parts also, there are many more cpu's to chose from that are cheaper.
