I have a mac mini but soon will have a imac, my question is what is better to do:

transfer 8mm cassettes to mac via firwire

OR

Transfer 8mm cassettes to a dvd recorder then rip the dvds to the mac.

Want the best quality possible, will be doing this to put 18 8mm tapes worth of video onto an external hd to put away to preserve, will make lower quality videos for viewing, dont really use dvds at all anymore

Definitely using a Firewire connection in combination with an analog-to-digital pass through a digital camcorder or a Digital8 camcorder will give the best results. Be aware howver that it will take around 13GB/hour.
