This is the first time I'm doing it and I would like to know the easiest setup.

Computer:
OS - Vista 32 bit Home Basic
RAM - 1GB
Processor - AMD Celeron 3800+ Duo Core

Camera:
Canon ZR300 with DV Firewire port

Firewire port (Installed):
Features/Specifications:
3-Port Firewire + 5-Port USB 2.0 Combo PCI Card

General Features:
VIA VT6214L / VT6306 chipsets
PCI 2.2 interface
Plug and Play
Hot Swappable

VIA VT6306 IEEE 1394a FireWire Features:
Two (2) IEEE 1394A FireWire external ports
One (1) IEEE 1394A FireWire internal port
Integrated 400MBit PHY
Support High Performance Bus Mastering

VIA VT6214L USB 2.0 Features:
Four (4) USB 2.0 external ports
One (1) USB 2.0 internal port
Up to 480 Mbps data transfer for USB 2.0
USB 1.1 compliant

Capture program:
Roxio 9
Windows Movie Maker

Are there any other good free capture programs out there that is compatible with Vista? I am not able to see the preview screen with Roxio or Windows Movie Maker.

And just to get your terminology up to date, it is a firewire cable, not firewall cable.

Ooops (Firewire)...that's what I meant.

Also my computer sits on the shut down screen and freezes. I think my driver for the firewire port is hanging it up. Any ideas on how I can shut off the driver automatically so my computer can shut down?

It shouldn't be running, after you shut down the capture software. Try a defrag of your drive to see if that helps.

If it doesn't, make sure that firewire driver, or whatever, isn't running at startup of the computer.
