I'm about to buy a internal burner for my dell desktop. my question is, what is this whole sata and/or ide model all about? which should i be buying? thanks.
Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect.

Most newer computers including the new Dell's are using all SATA motherboards.

I could take the time to explain both formats IDE and SATA, but I am feeling just to lazy right now :-)
Main thing you need to know is SATA is much faster and newer, so if your motherboard supports SATA by all means get a SATA drive over IDE anyday, but make sure your board supports SATA first.

Oh yeah and if your board does support SATA you will also need to make sure you have a SATA power connector. If you dont it isnt a big deal because you can get a cable to convert a 5v 4 pin power connector into a 15pin 250mV power connector for a buck or two. Just something else you need to be aware of. :-)

SATA Vs. IDE
1) SATA can support data transfers at about 150MB/second. Future versions of sata (like sata 2) will support data transfer of up to a projected 600 MB/second.
IDE can only support up to 133 MB/sec
2) SATA cables which connect the drive are so much smaller than the regular tick grey ribbons which connect ide drives. The reduced size of the wires allow for better airflow which is becoming increasingly important as processors get faster and as systems support more RAM.
3) SATA drives come with a 15pin 250mV power connector. This reduces the load on the computer?s power supply which will also help decrease in-case temperatures.
4) SATA interface has the ability to hot swap drives. Hot swap means that you can pull your drive from your machine and replace it with a different drive without restarting your computer.

Thanks for the explanation BBmayo but, all i wanted to know is which internal dvd burner i should buy, i don't want to buy one i can't install. again, i have a dellDimension B110 Series, Intel Celeron D Processor 325 (2.53GHz) and 256K cache,Not RoHS Compliant 256MB DDR SDRAM at 400MHz Dell USB Keyboard 80GB 7200 RPM Ultra ATA Hard Drive. thanks

Sorry if you got the impression I was upset as I surely don't let anything here upset me. It's just a forum and not the real world here as some would tend to think. I was just trying to help on your original question is all and you used the word "again" in your 2nd post making it sound like you had already asked the question about your specific brand and model of computer which you didn't. paiger651 has answerd what I believe you were looking for? i bought a sata dvd burner off ebay, its brand new, but i didnt know anything about them. I have a dell dimension 2300 and my computer does not support sata so what do i do??

yea that should work but i want to get a converter . my computer is ide, and my dvd rw drive is sata. i found alot on ebay but, its the other way around. .. anybody know where to find what im looking for?

You need PCI SATA controller card but alot of people have terrible results trying to run SATA dvd burner's off of these.

I like Promise brand but i suggest doing a little research to see what brand and model people have had the most success with runing optical drives.I would just get a good ide burner because your not going to gain anything with the SATA and your going to have more money in it after you purchase a good SATA controller card.

Just for the record, the speed of the DVD burner wether it is SATA or IDE (PATA) will make no difference at the moment, purely because DVD roms are no way near the speed of hard drives in burst transfer or constant transfer. I wouldn't reccomend either based on speed, but would reccomend SATA as they dont require you to change jumpers, and have thinner cables to assist with airflow in your case.
