I currently have a Toshiba 720p LCD with a Toshiba D-R400 DVD player with upconversions up to 1080p. Am I gonna see the difference with the PS3 Blu-Ray player with my 720p TV?

Compared to 480i (SDTV) yes, you will see a noticable difference between that and 720p.
720p means your image will be made up of 1.5 times more "lines", as compared to 480p which makes your image look even better, plus Progressive scan helps keep away blocks etc.

Let me rephrase my question....
Am I gonna see the big HD difference between a movie watched on my DVD player (UPCONVERTED TO 1080P) and the PS3's Blue-ray player which is 1080
I ask because my TV is only 720p not 1080..... So I'm putting a constraint on the blu-ray player.I'm only gonna see 720p blu-ray not 1080.

Yes you will see a big difference in PQ especially if you use an HDMI cable. You can set the input resolution on the PS3 up to 1080p. Your TV will downscale to it's native resolution in your case 720P. If you are sitting about 10 feet away and with your size TV even if you had 1080P capability it would be very difficult to tell the difference in PQ between 720P and 1080P. By the way the upconversion capability of the PS3 for standard DVDs is terrific as well.

Here is what you do instead, Get a upconverting dvd player (available for $50-100 anywhere). You will not be able to tell the difference at all between it. The only reason to go out and spend the enourmous amount of money for hd dvd or bluray is if you have a 1080P television. Up converting is cheap and plays all normal dvds. Dont upgrade to bluray or hd dvd unless you upgrade your tv first.

I got my ps3 ( 60gb)last week.I wanted it for it's
blu-ray dvd capability.I was most concerned with how
it would play my standard dvd's.All I can say is awsome !!!
When I play some of my std dvd's for movies from the 50'S
and 60"s with the technicolour pictures, it is as close to
an HD picture as I have ever seen.It easily beats out my
upconverting dvd player.I recently watched Ice Station Zebra
and the pq was awsome.The same thing can be said for Heaven
Knows Mister Allison,Anastasia,Gone With The wind and The
King and I Etc.,Etc.,Etc.
What I found most interesting was to compare the std version
of The Fifth Element to the Bd version.I found that the difference
was minimal.Therefore,since my tv displays 720P only.it makes
no sense to buy BD movies when the Ps3 plays the std dvd's
so extremely well.(SONY KF-E50A10-rear projection lcd hdtv)
An interesting side note.I had a guy at my home who had just
spent $5000.on a big screen plasma tv.and his mouth dropped
when he saw the pq that I was getting on my tv.He looked as
if he felt he had just thrown away $5000.
Am I a happy camper with my ps3? YES!!!!!!
P.S. Anyone who says that lcd's don't display black really well,
doesn't know what they are talking about as far as my tv is
concerned.
P.P.S It also plays my burned dvd's just as good as store bought.
Anyone know how to hack the Ps3 so it will play region 2 discs?

I have a Sony 46" LCD, 720p or 1080i and the picture from my new Panasonic DMP-BD30 Blu-ray blows away my up-convert Toshiba player and that's standard DVDs and of course Blu-ray disc, but not all Blu-ray disc are created equal.
But the other big point of Blu-ray is the sound quality is in a CLASS all by it self, I had been using my new Panasonic Blu-ray for the first 2 weeks (12/01/07) using the optical cable decoding Dolby Digital from my 5yr old Sony STRDA3ES as a pre and a nice NAD 7ch amp with Studio Paradigm speakers bi-amping the fronts. Just normal Dolby Digital decoding from Blu-ray player on BD disc or standard disc, no more than the up-convert Toshiba :(.
Now I haven't heard the DD Plus, DTS HD, or Dolby True HD & DTS HD Master Audio bit streamed through HDMI. But after some research I decided to hook up the 5.1 LPCM analog from the Pan BD30 to my Sony multi input since that was my only other option, I did my own sound test, maybe it was apples to oranges, but it worked for me. I played the DD track on the BD disc compared to the Uncompressed 5.1 on the same disk, I played BD DVD Casino Royal with Daniel Craig, the new James Bond 007, the first seen I was blown away by the 5.1. No decoding, just straight analog by-pass multi input with the "Uncompressed 5.1" audio track. The BD disc version of this movie is a lot better than the standard version, it's a BD must see.
Unbelievable sound quality, the clarity from every horn, gun shot was so realistic, crystal clear, I heard sounds from my speakers I didn't know they could produce. Now most Blu-ray disc come with a dedicated "Uncompressed 5.1" audio track in setup which is your LPCM 5.1, I don't know about the HD disc, I've read where the Dolby HD True has to be converted in Toshiba's HD for LPCM 5.1? I'm assuming the LPCM is the bit for bit master sound. I plan on testing a BD disc without the ?Uncompressed 5.1? track to see if it compares to a disc with ?Uncompressed 5.1?, I?ve seen a lot of J&R?s blu-ray?s without PCM 5.1 and just Dolby Digital.
Which also leads me to what's the big need for HDMI switching if they?re giving you the same Dolby True HD quality, but on another track and without having to upgrade your receiver or processor, providing it has the multi-inputs and your BD player has 5.1 output?
Oh, don't buy a player without 5.1 outputs!!!
And I thought HDMI on receivers was part marketing scam?hmm, I love this game!!
