Big, cool running PATA HD that's not Western Digital?

This might not be the ideal place to ask about a HD for a PS2, but since my concern was related to a relatively cool running HD I thought this part of the forums might be a better place to ask this question..

As you might know the old (fat) PS2s have a 3.5 enclosure for a HD. For what ever reason the way it connects to the network adapter really doesn't like Western Digital. It also only supports PATA drives.

I was considering getting a nice big 500 GB PATA HD until someone pointed out the obvious, that it would likely burn up in the enclosure. There doesn't seem to be any commercial applications that could help much to cool down the HD, so I'm trying to come up with some good cool drives.

I'd like a reliable, cool running drive. Performance isn't that big a issue since I'd be using it with HD Loader and I'd be getting better performance even on a slow HD. Mainly I'd want as big a HD as I could get, that isn't likely to burn up in the uncooled environment. Any advice at all is welcome. Thanks in advance.

500GB drives that run cool unfortunately don't exist. The only way I can think of doing it is running the cable out of the console to a hard drive in an external enclosure.

I've come to the same conclusion, so I'm trying to find as large a HD as I can that won't be likely to burn up. I am having trouble finding good information as to how hot a particular hard drive runs so it makes searching difficult. I was hoping someone had some suggestions.

The only large IDE drives I've used have been WDs I'm afraid...

I have 500gb maxtor's,seagates and a 400gb western digital but I have fans on all of them that keeps them below 45 celcius, without fans they can get up to 55 celcius. I have a seagate 300gb with a fan on it that's running at 38 celcius on this computer. Even my external hard drives, I have spot tied 80mm case fans on them, I don't run any hard drives without some sort of fan blowing on them.
I wouldn't recommend running a large hard drive(no matter how cool it runs) without a fan. They get hot quickly especially when the outside temperature is hot.

I've never done any physical modification to a PS2 (or really anything for that matter) so my solutions seem a bit limited. I can't find any commercial solutions for cooling the PS2 HD down. Would a laptop cooling fan help if I set the PS2 on that?

Beyond that what would the threshold be in terms of what HD I could trust to run properly on the uncooled environment? I've always heard people recommend against uncooled external enclosures but it would seem that I don't have much of a choice if I want to use a HD with my PS2 (heh, which still seems better than putting all my faith in it's crappy laser).

The only thing a fan will do is extend the life of a hard drive, but even without a fan most hard drives will give you at least a year of service. As long as you backup your hard drive occasionally, you can run it without a fan. On one of my external drives that has no fan, I usually run a table fan pointed at it if I plan on using it for more than a hour. Maybe pointing a table fan at your hard drive enclosure will keep the temperature down, it works good on my external hard drive.
It's not a perfect solution but it does work.

i have a 300gig 7200rpm maxtor (box model L01Y300, hd sticker 6A320Y0) in my ps2 with no fans blowing on the hdd; only fan is the one in the ps2. i have left it on over 24 hours (doing txr0 mileage trick) and have played gta:sa for 4-5 hours. my system is on the carpet, system was still cool, and hdd was warm. you should be able to run a 500gig maxtor with no problems. usb hdd shouldn't be used, as the ps2 only has low speed usb 1.1; horrible game lag.

the ps2 fan will spin faster when a hdd is used; it's completely normal. it's cooling the hdd as much as it can.

i've had my ps2 setup for 10 months now, and it's still running like new. no hdd failure, no errors. i only defrag the hdd when i put new games on it, but i haven't gotten new games in a while. also, the monthly cleaning of the ps2 helps out.

you can modify the network adapter to accept WD drives. many people have done that. but since sony used maxtor as the official hdd, most people go with that. you can find stats and other info on hdd drives for the ps2 HERE

once ssd drives break the 500gig barrier, then i'll switch over to that. but it won't be until how many years until the ssd is at an affordable price.

I believe there was a technical research paper Seagate published, and it said that hard drives can sustain very high temperatures without much of a reduction in their lifespan. I believe 70C was the point where the life of the drive started dropping noticeably. Between 50C and 70C, the drives would last almost the same amount of time, they would just operate slower because there were occasional errors. Believe it or not, below 35C, the drives had a significantly shorter lifespan, put down to the fact that Hard drives are still electro-mechanical, and you still have to warm up machinery!

just left the ps2 on for 10 hours now. took off the network adapter and the hdd. the hdd was only warm to the touch. not sure about the temp; it was just like holding a non-used hdd in your had for a while. the ps2 fan is sufficient enough.

the ps2 doesn't read the hdd as much as you think. you can see the hdd light blink constantly, but it's not running hard. also, with my maxtor, the hdd is kinda loud when being read. when leaving it on, you don't hear it, therefore it's not being read that much.

Thanks a lot for the input and information. It set my mind at ease a bit. I think I'll still take a couple steps to keep the PS2 cool (if nothing else it might keep the PS2 itself from overheating), I'm thinking of getting this: GEMINI ACCESS Cool & Clean and probably a vertical stand and go with that. As far as HD goes, I'll just go with something big and cheap that seems compatible and see how that goes.

test it without the cool and clean first. because the fan might be too loud to the liking. then if the hdd is too hot, you can use the fan.

also, with the monthly cleaning of your room, you should clean your ps2 for dust. some compressed air, couple qtips, and a vacuum will do it.
