The Sonys are definitely a good choice, haven't had a problem with a disc yet (DVD+R's). I've never actually used Maxells, but I know many members do like the Made In Japan 8x DVD+R's. I say pass on the other brands though especially Memorex which are the only discs I've ever had problems with.
The only real problem with Wal-Mart is they don't have many sales on DVD media. As for online buying you can score really good prices on DVD-R's, not so much DVD+r's.

Aren't Maxells made by CMC Mag these days? I wouldn't recommend them if Sony D21s are available.

well you could try another walmart -assuming you have one close by? of the media you mention I would agree that the sony is a good choice especially if you can get some made in japan !!! But the taiwan made sony is very good as well !! ON the Maxell again if you can find the MIJ Grab it !!!!!!!!!! occasionally you will find some at a Walmart though usually in the smaller packs !!! In the case of The made in Taiwan Maxell you can tell by the part number on the wrapper ( near the bar code/UPC label) To quote Bratcher "
Check the end codes in the part number for the actual manufacturer.

CMC is CMC
MDM is Ritek
PT is Prodisc
RT is Ricoh

Of these the Ritek & Ricoh media are good for video. I'd only trust Prodisc & CMC for data storage." I would agree with Bratchers comments having had good experience with both Ritek & Ricohjpn( Ricoh) media - so Either Get the sony's or The maxells ( If they are Riteks /ricohjpn or Japanese !) Also if you can get to a Officedepot or order from them online their OFFICEDEPOT Brand DVD media is Normally either RItek or Ricohjpn ( Ricoh) and often on sale much cheaper than the equivalent Maxells Which will have similar Ritek or Ricoh media codes assuming that they are they same type and speed?Main difference other than price is Cosmetic /branding - Officedpot sometimes has buy one get one or Buy two get one free sales so you can sometimes really load up cheaply if you wanted too ? Stay away from The Ativa ( Also a officeDepot brand ) media it's CMC hope That helps some & good luck !!!!!

Wal Mart price matches . .

And as far as the discs that you list . . . you also mention that they are all made in Taiwan . . without you having to be an expert and read codes and the like . . .

Get the Sony discs . .

I would just tell you stick with the name brand unless you are buying something like sugar or salt.
What I'm trying to say is, would you buy great value? toilet paper 2 wipe your butt with?
If so you will probabley have 2 pains in the a**.

The only problem with that is some of the name brands don't actually make their own DVDs, but instead, get their DVDs from lesser manufacturers such as CMC Mag or MBI. Of the brands the OP listed the only one that he is sure to get quality media from is Sony. If he finds Japanese Maxells those are good too, but they've become so rare that I doubt he'd find any.

Walmart only? Bummer.

Can't order from the net?

Check the labels over for Made in Japan for the Maxell and sony.If none available, then here's what I'd do,but I only use the plus format for my regular dvd backups:

1) Sony, +8x and +16x. The Made in Taiwans are very good.

2) Maxell, only in the +8x speed. These will ID as Riteks, but a 50-50 shot at cmags if using the maxell +8x full hub inkjet printables.

3) Memorex, only in the +16x speed. These have been ID'ing as Ricohjpn-R03 and are very good as well.

4 and 5) This will be a tie-cmag made Maxell +16x and probably HP. Still decent, but burners and stand alone players can be pickier with them.

6) Imation: I wouldn't even bother unless their quality standards has risen lately.

Keep an eye out for the odder stores like Radio Shack,Odd Lots/Big Lots,Walgreens,CVS,Riteaid,Sears. Sometimes you can find a treasure with some of the older MIJ media like the +8x maxell and +8x Sony.

I have driven 1 hr to buy verbatim at bargain prices. Just have to stock up when going the longer distances during the good sales.
