I have a problem with the capture just stopping when going from a VHS to HD. I have an ADS Pyro link 550 with 1394 connection. The capture might go for an hour and just stop on the PC side. A monitor on output of the ADS show the VHS continuing.

Any suggestions where to start?

I would suggest email or telephone to ADS-Tech tech-support. They are quite good and responsive.

Have you tried using a different port in your Firewire card? Have you tried deleting and allowing Windoze to re-install the Firewire card driver? Have you tried another Firewire cable? Longshot - perhaps a defective Firewire card?

Most PCs these days have enough HDD throughput to sustain capture but you also might try using the freebie utiltiy HDTune to make sure you have at least 30 MegaBits/second (3.8 MegaBytes/second). You might not have enough throughput, for instance, if you are using a laptop with a 5400 rpm HDD.

HDTune gives me HD Tune: WDC WD2500JB-00REA0 Benchmark

Transfer Rate Minimum : 34.4 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 61.6 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 52.4 MB/sec
Access Time : 13.6 ms
Burst Rate : 67.2 MB/sec
CPU Usage : 10.0%

So OK here.

I have changed ports and cables but just noticed my printer is using other 1394 port rather than USB.

I'll look for a 1394 test routine next I guess.

Thanks,
RON C

Your printer connects via 1394? That would be unusual.

Verify whether you have a "combo" PCI card with both USB and 1394 ports. Problem with those is they share (devide) bandwidth, and any other device connected and powered will reduce throughput. If you have one of these, temporarily disconnect all other devices and see if you can then sustain a completed capture session. If that is the problem then you will have get an additional Firewire card to dedicate to capturing.

I do have a "combo" PCI card with both USB and 1394 ports. I will run a test with all other devices unplugged.

I do have a special printer that is 1394 but of no interest in this conversation.

Thanks for help - this might be it.
