I wanted to build a gaming computer for myself.
This is my first build.

I bought these parts from newegg.

Sunbeam Transformer Blue full-tower case
Samsung spinpoint p series 250gb hard drive SATA
Foxconn 8800gts 640mb
Asus P5E intel x38 atx motherboard
intel q6600 2.4 ghz
Arctic silver thermal compund
Vista 32-bit
Rosewill 600W sli atx-12v V2.01
Hanns-g 17" monitor
(2) Kingston 1gb ddr2800 valueram 240-pin
liteon 20x dvd-burner

It all started with me connecting mobo to case. I then added power supply to case. I added dvd-drive to case and hard drive. (The dvd-drive almost made me jump out the window trying to install). I then added one of the 1gb ram stick. I connected power to all of the hardware that i installed. I installed the power button and hdd wires. I powered on the computer. It came on and it going. I was happy, so I then took it off and inserted the Graphics card. I added power to the graphics card. I turn on the computer and it came on, but no signal to the monitor. I was wondering what was the problem. I tried adding my old pci FX5200. I press power button, motherboard light came on but nothing else came on. I was wondering, so i took out power plug, switched the psu switch to off, then put it back on, and pluggedin the plug. It turned on this time, but again no signal to the monitor. So I took out the power plug, took out the pci card and switched in my new 8800. I pressed the power button and it came on. I got no signal, and tried the different ports on the card but nothing happened. I took out power plug, sitched cards, then i pressed the power button. No power came on, I pressed it again, no power, pressed it one last time, it came on after 2 seconds. It took about 4 seconds before i started to hear some crackle noise from the psu. I quickly switched the psu power switch to off and removed the plug. Smoke came out of the power supply and smelled up my whole room. I didnt bother turning on the computer. I knew my psu was fried, i did not know if it took any hardware along with it.
I just went to my computer and started to type this thing up.
Would it be safe to power on again?
Anyone with similar experiences?
What would any of you suggest?

Please help me, I spent $1600 on this thing, had parts for only 5 days. I might, MIGHT cry if no help comes.

Unfortunately this is probably due to you choosing a Rosewill power supply, known to be poor quality items prone to component damage and fires. All you can do is try attaching a proper power supply and see what still works. You shouldn't damage anything else by doing this. Try going for something like a Corsair HX 520W.

Believe me, that PC will probably only draw about 300W from the mains when running. 520W is plenty, it's the brand of the PSU that counts. Most Rosewill units can only produce about a quarter of their actual rating before they go up in smoke.

I'd recommend going with something a bit above a Thermaltake for that setup. They're far better units than the Rosewill, but nonetheless you want something that's rock solid to run a quad core and an 8800. You've spent a reasonable amount on your components, you should NEVER skimp on a power supply.
