Newbie - Advice needed on DVD-R for multiple replays

Hi guys.
I've had a surf through the threads and I haven't quite gotten the information I needed, so please forgive me if I ask a question that has been asked a thousand times before.
I've begone to make video compilations for people of their private footage, weddings, birthdays, etc... and I wanted to use the best quality DVDs to burn their compilations on.
The DVDs must be able to withstand multiple replays on ordinary DVD players. Is there a format out there that is best suited to this use and if at all possible, can I get the silver ones on the side that the laser reads.

Hi.. I know exactly what you mean.. It isn't very clear what disks are best.
For max compatibility with modern dvd players the best disks to use are dvd+r with the booktype set to -ROM.. Have a look at imgburn (free) which has an easy way to set that up if your burner supports it.
To disks.. I think the general agreement is to use either TY-YUDEN or VERBATIM dvd+r 8x and to burn at half the rated speed i.e 4x set to -ROM
You can't get the silver disks.. they are pressed, but if you are doing a massive amount of disks (over 5000 per issue) then it may be worth checking out if there are any local disk pressing plants who can do smaller runs from what are called "glass masters"

That sounds like good advice to me.
Why can't you get the blanks with silver sides? Seems a bit odd.

The advice you got from varnull is indeed very good.The reason why you can't get blank dvd with silver side is simply because they are not available to small consumers like us,they are mostly for big production like original commercial dvd movies.The process of putting data,movie or whatever it is on these silver discs is completely different from our way of burning them in our regular burners,they have special equipments and machines designed for pressing these discs.

The best media you can get in UK,as our dear Creaky used to get,is the Verbatim made by Taiyo Yuden,they are the ultra sexy verbs as he used to call them:)But that doesn't mean they are the cheapest.Be careful that you don't get crappy medias by trying to get at the cheapest price and at the easiest way because the market is so full of crap medias these days and i don't think you want to use them if you don't want to receive complaints from your customers.Normally i think these TY verbs are being sold at svp.co.uk but i don't know if they are still available,you'll be out of luck if Creaky has been quicker than you:)But if you can't get the TY Verbs(Made in Japan),those made in Taiwan Verbs will also do the trick,they code out as MCC and they are also very good medias.

Are you using a stand alone TV recorder or Dvd-Rw drive in the PC?
What's the brand name,model #,and current firmware version of your dvd-rw drive?
Here's a free progran that will help,if it's a pc dvd-rw drive:

It'll show actual model# and Current firmware version,helping us figure out if that dvd-rw drive can booktype.Not all drives have this ability.
Sounds like stand alone player compatability will be the major factor. Lots and lots of different players being used to play your backups,gotta make them as highly compatable as possible-otherwise those people getting your dvds will have a higher chance of getting No disc/Dirty disc/Wrong region/Wrong format type of display errors when inserting those backups.
Stand alone players can be picky when it comes to reading our Dvd +R and Dvd -R backups.+RW and -RW can be even trickier.
Depending on what burner/s you are using,You need to booktype them to Dvd-rom.Let's hope yours has the ability to booktype-also known as Bit-Setting.

They are +R DVDs with Verbatim's "videoguard" technology. It is a form of protection that makes the DVD 40 times harder to scratch on the optical side of the disc. The DVDs only come in 10 packs and cost about $12, but look at it this way, these are some of the toughest "high qualtiy" DVDs and they come with DVD cases. Perfect for the people you are making these projects for.

I just checked at svp.co.uk and i've noticed that they have Taiyo Yuden Verbatim DVD+R 16x available in tub of 50 at the price of 9.99 pound sterling or for a box of 200 discs it will cost you 37.99 pound sterlings all vat inclusive,i do find them very affordable for such top notch media,i'm pretty sure other places they will charge you much more for that.These are the best you can get.First check if your burner supports booktyping,i.e setting DVD+R format to DVD-ROM,as this will make the media more compatible on standalone players.Make sure your burner has the latest firmware update and burn at half the rated speed.Here's the link.
