Hi, Im a newb myself but I just wanted to verify that the procedure I went through to enable Azureus port forwarding is acceptable. By the way I do no longer recieve a NAT error, not that im entirely sure how I fixed it. This post is more for specualtion and reference and debate but feedback is welcome =]

Netgear Router
Windows Vista
Azureus torrent client

Enabled port forwarding though my router firewall - opened a service port 49160 for TCP/UDP** and 49161 for TCP/UDP**. In fact 49160 is going to be designated for TCP and 49161 UDP but more on that a bit later. Disabled uPnP.

Then proceded to assign a static IP through windows vista network config. Made it outside my DHCP range (which was 192.168.0.2-192.168.0.51) and assigned myself 192.168.0.55 as my IP. TO NOTE: the prefered DNS server is meant to be your router IP ie in my case : 192.168.0.1 and youre meant to leave the alternate DNS blank. I have been misled in previous articles saying to copy the info regarding DNS and alternate DNS from ipconfig /all, which are your external DNS settings and are incorrect to enter here as far as I know.

**Becuase of the way vista opens ports you cannot have both TCP AND UDP as the radio button does not allow this through vista's windows firewall - so this is why I opened two ports earlier - one dedicated to each - but made it 'all inclusive' through the firewall service by leaving 49160 and 49161 both as UPD AND TCP. I believe the UDP is important because it has something to do with a hash table working correctly. SO- in windows firewall I opened two ports - 49160 and 49161 and made them respectively TCP and UDP (49160 and 49161) as well as enabling the program azureus itself through the firewall. Through the latest Azureus VUZE you can configure seperate listen ports for UDP AND TCP and so:

In Azureus, configure through the options>connection menu i made Azureus TCP listen port 49160 and UDP listen port 49161. Disabled uPnP in the plugins menu here aswell.

SIDE NOTE: After continiously getting "IP in use" errors I used the cmd > netstat -p tcp -ano command and discovered the PID of programs using the 49160 and 49161 ports and ended up diabling the uPnP service in vista (rtclick my computer, properties, manage) and also enabled the 'TPM base services' to automatic?? who knows what this does exactly - but it was one of several services seemingly using this port??

after a wait (few mins) and a reboot everything seems to work fine, but as i said ive probably gone over the top configuring this stuff and would appreciate any advice as to how to lock down my machine a bit more.

FINAL NOTE: I also frequently used a port scan to check whether my 49160 and 49161 ports were open - which in fact windows firewall had significant effect. so now i have no NAT error and I am totally vulnerable and my download speed still isnt above 30KB/s so why i went through all this effort - make me feels better haha. btw im from australia so maybe these speeds are typical - on cable (doubt it but then again what can you do - guess it depends on your local seeders).......

cheers guys would greatly appreciate feed back.
