.ass subs in DVD Lab Pro?

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how they got around it. Would converting the subs to a different format have any ill effects? The subs are for an Anime and when certain words are used they display another set of subs at the top of the screen explaining said word, Would that feature be lost? or anything else? or is there an easy way to get .ass subs in DVD Lab Pro?
