Hello. I tried to play a DVD (<<Das Leben der Anderen>> by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck) on my laptop, but the pc did not even SEE the disc. So there's no way to either play the disc, because it seems it's not there!
This is the very first time i have a problem like this. Is it a new protection code? I am used to rent DVDs to play them on my laptop when i'm away on business trip, but this time ... no way.
If I had spent money to BUY this DVD, I would have wasted my money, as i could not either see or make a backup copy of it. To make backup copies of DVDs i currently use RipIt4me + DVD Shrink and it's working fine on every DVD, even the very recent ones.
1)A simple SYSTEM power cycle might do it, even when your laptop is 3)off it uses battery power, take out the battery and allow the computer to stay with out power for 1 hour, this will allow all power to discharge from the motherboard, try to run the dvd after this
2)ok try running other dvds on it, make sure the disc your running isn't damaged
if your computer is not running any dvds first try to do a system restore point (my documents will not be deleted), control panel> performance and maintenance> system restore point on the upper left of
your window you will see the option, try a date before you played the dvd, if you can't get the dvd to play undo the restore, you go to the same area to undo it (you have a limited time to undo it)
3)your probably having a driver issue, it suggested you boot into safe mode when uninstalling any driver.
mycomputer> right click> properties> hardware tab> device manager> then under the tab CR-ROM/DVD-ROM DEVICES (names will differ)
then restart your computer and once you've logged in windows will prompt you install the driver for the drive, if not go to the control panel>printers and other hardware> add hardware.
4)if after all this your drive still doesn't pick up any discs then your
ata/48 pin/sata/4 pin power connector(S) might be disconnected or blocked with dust (often happens in laptops), so check the physical aspect of your drive
report back to me your with your results, then will see....
it doesn't seem to be a problem of the drive or a damage in the DVD disc:
1) the dvd drive is working fine on any other cd or dvd: in the same days i had the problem with "that" dvd (das leben ....) i was playing and ripping Spiderman 3 and Borat and Flyboys and others, so it must be something related to that movie/disc;
2) it's not THAT physical disc, as i came back to the store and asked for another copy of that movies and i experienced exactly the same problem.
Therefore i thought it is a new protection code that makes dvds not compatible with a dvd player of the pc (NOTE that if i use an external dvd player - the one i have in my hifi system - the dvd is working!!!).
