So my SATA HDD is working great and i decided to take apart the old computer and decided the only parts worth saving were the HDD except it was a gray ribbon cable HDD. I put it in the cage and plugged it into the MOBO (not sure if its even in the right spot) and then booted up the computer.

Ignorant me thinking that it would just appear as an extra drive in My Computer.

How exactly do i get my old files from the HDD on to my new one? Or be able to use it as a slave drive or what not.

Make sure the drive is set as master on the IDE cable, and then use the first IDE slot on your motherboard (if you even have more than one).

haha yeah the MOBO only had one slot so i calculated it to be that one ;)

I can hear the drive start up so i know it has power too. That and i plugged it into using the black "master cable" as well. Do i need to do something in the BIOS?

You shouldn't need to. Does the drive appear in disk management?
(Start -> Run) diskmgmt.msc

is the red or blue strip on the data cable beside the power connector of the drive? if using a 80 wire 40 pin cable, is the drive on the end connector or middle connector?

Woah

retard moment. I needed to flip the connector that was attached to the HDD. It plugged in correctly both ways but that fixed it. Hurray me. Mods can close/lock topic if wanted.
