Well I had tried vlc player but its horrendous trying to figure out how to actually play movies off the hdd on it. There is no easy way other than to drag and drop each file into a playlist and even then its really messed up and doesnt always play.

I tried a slightly older version of Powerdvd and it seems to work. However one of the bd discs i have on hdd wont play as it gives me a message in Powerdvd saying its not the correct region. Is there any way to override this for good? Powerdvd doesnt let me change the region as its not a disc its just blu ray files on the comp so the options to do that are greyed out.

if you are trying to play mkv files that are hddvd or bluray you will need GOM player and COREAVC codec and FFDshow as well. This will play a lot smoother then VLC since the coreavc codec is a very high end codec.

mkv is a x264 format, basically if you acquired the bluray or hddvdrip from somewhere other then copying the files from your computers bluray drive, it is most likely in this format.

The generic file format for bluray is bdrom and uses any of the following three codecs: mpeg2, VC-1, or h264. You will need codecs that play those files in order to view them on your computer if you have an identical copy of a bluray movie (an iso image).

What is the file extension of the file you are trying to play?
