All computer drives & most (95% or so) DVD players will take eith the + or - R format so it's your choice on which one to buy as they are both good.

Just to add to what has already been said, if your burner is capable of bitsetting/booktyping your best chance at compatability would be to get +R flavored discs and booktype them to ROM.

Yes, although most players will accept both formats, burners will normally only write to one or the other. I suggest finding out what format your drive uses first!!

I don't think you got it right here,it's the dvd player that should be checked whether it supports both formats as some older standalone player would play the -R format and not the +R format but if the DVD+R is booktyped to DVD-ROM then it won't be a problem as it's been set in the same format as any original commercial movie dvd on the market.Whereas dvd burners can burn both formats, but as said by LOCOENG,he should check if his burner is capable of booktyping first,if it can then it's better to use the +R format booktyped to DVD-ROM as it would make it more compatible on even older standalone players,if not then he better stick with the -R format.

It all depends on what burner you have-Model#,and all the other stand alone players,pc drives, and game consoles that you plan for your backups to be played in.
1)Booktyping drive like Liteon,Plextor,Benq,LGand some others:
Definitely plus format and set the booktype to dvd-rom.
2)Non Booktyping drives:
Dash format.
All dvd drives are different-both burners and players. Some of these drives will favor the plus format, dash format, both formats,or may not even play any of them. Lots of variations between drives and drives can be picky when it comes reading dvd backups.
Game420: What is the brand name/model#,and current firmware version of your dvd-rw drive?
Compatability between the plus and dash formats is the main reason. The compatability issue arrises when you slap a backup dvd disc in and get any of the following error messages:
No Disc
Dirty Disc
Wrong region
Wrong format
Illegal disc
Player model #'s? Some peeps go by what their specs say that their players will and won't play. I ignore the specs. A player may play the dash format from 1 person's burner, but not a dash format from your burner.
Booktyping the plus format to dvd-rom-with quality plus format media will give the highest compatable backups. It'll give me a 95%+ chance of playing anywhere I desire.
Dash format and plus format alone will yield lower compatability rates.
Most people don't realize the differences between either format, until when handing those backups to thier buddies and family members. They are the ones who will tell you that there is a problem to play them.
Let us know what burner you have. Not all drives have bitsetting capability to booktype.
