hey, I had this problem once before, and I learned a lot of stuff, but this is my third re-install and re-configure, and no matter what I do, everything is slow as hell, no matter what. It's like a modem.
All of these troubleshooting things don't work. Any port I check is closed, I'm still using zone alarm and the newest utorrent. Help me out, asap, I'm going nuts here.
Quote: Hi,
I'm using zone alarm internet security suite, and utorent. I have utorent allowed through my router, "2wire 1701HG Gateway" and allowed in Zone alarm Internet security suite.
I cannot figure out how to get the port open. I've also edited the stupid windows firewall settings, but windows firewall is disabled.
I can't get better download speeds than about 30k/s for any one download, and about 50k/s total. I have a faster internet connection than that. Can anyone help with this problem?
EDIT
I'm using an Nlited copy of windows XP, and I tried to use this, from that old thread:
http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm And when I click my network connections, nothing shows up. And it kinda does screwy stuff when I try options in the advanced tab. I'm confused. Maybe I just need to reinstall something or fix something, hopefully.
Probably not what you want to hear, but ditch Zone Alarm! It is a medicore firewall, plus it extremely frustrating to get it to work like you want. Disable it, try windows firewall. Agnitum has a great free firewall, I use the pro version...the free one is better then Zone Alarm and wont give you a headache when doing routine tasks! Might want to consider giving it a shot.
I've been using zone alarm for 3 years, and I agree, it is a headache, but headache translates to safety. I could be convinced otherwise, but all the problems with zone alarm I'm very familiar with, so I'm pretty happy with it.
Mistycat - I don't believe that's the problem. Thanks anyway. I also tried to port you mentioned in the other port, I think it was 1720, and it says that is closed too.
Do a google search. The firewall I suggested is superior to Zone Alarm and very user friendly. If you are an advanced user there are many great options. Headaches dont equal better security, Zone Alarm is known to leak. What do you have to lose by trying Outpost? If you dont like it, by all means go back to Zone Alarm.
Hey, I took a look at torrent.jpg, and it looks like I might have a dynamic IP or something, it DOES start with 192.168... So I tried this link from the old thread:
http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm But when I enter my network connections, there is nothing there. I'm obviously connected to the internet, but windows doesn't see the connection - what's going on? I think I just need to make my IP static, but I don't know how if I can't use that info.
EDIT
When I refresh my network connections list, it says: "The network connections folder was unable to retrieve the list of network adapters on your machine. Please make sure that the network connections service is enabled and running."
EDIT
OK, I got my network stuff to display and figured all that out, but I'm still being throttled, and as far as that guide went, I am set up for a static IP, but I don't know if my router does crazy stuff to it - I can't imagine any of that would have changed ,though, since my last wipe, since it's not like that effects my router...
OK, I got it, and it's hard to explain, but it's almost entirely the pre-made Nlited windows I used, titled TinyXP. Moral of the story - stay away from disabling services you don't know if you need or not.
