Can't burn downloaded PS2 ISOs

Hi there, I have been able to backup my games using DVD Decrypter. When I make the backup of the game to my hard drive, it produces a .mds and .iso file, and I am able to burn it to a DVD and it works fine.
I've downloaded a few PS2 games, but they only come with the .iso file, and when I burn them to a DVD using DVD Decrypter or Nero 7, they don't work in the PS2. It just displays the "Playstation 2" logo, then goes to a black screen and sits there instead of loading the game. Does anybody know why this is happening? I have tried 3 different downloaded games, all with just a single .iso file, and all with the same result. Is there something special I need to be doing since they don't have a .mds file?
I am using Optodisc DVDs (class 2 according to the forums rankings) and have an LG burner. Like I said, I am able to backup my games fine so the media and burner shouldn't be the problem, it is just downloaded games I am having trouble with. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd try first class media such as Verbatim, and burn the disc at half it's max speed eg 8x speed discs at 4x and 16x speed discs at 8x.
Remember that just because other games have worked on lower class discs, doesn't mean they all will. When I first started backing up games and didn't know any better, I used DVD+RWs and they worked fine, but eventually I had problems with them and a lot of games wouldn't work with them. I changed to Verbatim recordables and have never had a problem since.
Not only that, poorer quality discs will make your PS2 laser work harder and shorten it's life.

Alright, I'm looking at ordering some Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 8X 4.7GB 100DISC Spindle Shiney Silver Top DVDs for $40. They also have the Taiyo Yuden DVD+R 8X 4.7GB 100DISC Spindle Shiney Silver for $50. So is one better than the other for PS2 games (DVD-R vs. DVD+R)? Should I pay the $10 more for the DVD+Rs?
Also besides the DVD itself, is there any other reason why downloaded games wouldn't work and backups of real games would? Is a .mds file manditory to burn the games properly?
I forgot to mention in my first post that I'm downloading games I do own; just the kids got to them and they're all scratched up. I'm going to convert my backups to Taiyo Yuden DVDs now that I know bad quality DVDs can wreck the PS2 laser and won't last as long. Thanks!

Most people say that DVD-R is best for the older 'fat' PS2s and that DVD+R is best for the slims. Taiyo Yuden is also great media :)
Just having a single ISO is fine, around 95% of games that are downloaded are just a single file ISO. The only other reasons I can think of besides poor quality discs are a faulty modchip, your laser is gone or you got a bad ISO, but having said that, your other games work fine so that rules out laser/modchip faults and since it's happened with approximately 3 ISO files you've downloaded and the PS2 logo screen comes up, they seem to definitely be PS2 games and you'd have to be pretty unlucky to have downloaded 3 bad ISOs.
I also just realised you didn't mention what you are using - mod chip or swap magic? If it's swap magic then you may have to use a different booting method than you usually do, some games (I believe) can require something called cogswap or zoneloader, or using a different setting; I'm not 100% sure with Swap Magic as I have never used it, only caught a little bit of info about them from reading posts on this forum.
Nevertheless it's still a wise idea to change your media type, regardless of your success with games in the past (as you agree) due to the problems they can cause.
If it is Swap Magic you are using, I'd use search criteria such as 'swap magic', 'SM', 'swap magic settings', 'sm settings' 'zoneloader' and 'cogswap'. Either that or wait for a reply from someone with experience in the swap magic game, although this forum is pretty dead now so I'd go for the DIY option.

Thanks for the reply again schweet. And to answer your question I am using a PS2-slim (SCPH-70011) and is has a mod chip installed. I'm not sure which one though since I bought it second hand with the mod chip already installed.
Once I get the Taiyo Yuden DVDs I'll let you know if that fixed the problem or not. Thanks again!

Alright, I got my Taiyo Yuden DVDs and started burning some of the games I downloaded. It seems that only about half of them work though. The ones that don't work usually just show the "Playstation 2" logo, then go to a black screen. Does anybody know why some of them wouldn't be working? I'm guessing that the ones that aren't working are PAL, not NTSC, but I need to do more testing to be sure. Would this make sense that only the PAL DVDs wouldn't work? because I thought that a modded playstation 2 could play both PAL and NTSC. I got the modded playstation 2 second hand, so I'm not sure what mod chip is in it. I tried using the ps2_ntsc2pal_yfix.exe but it didn't seem to make a difference on the 2 games I tried it on. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Try burning with Imgburn, or Alchohol 120%. Make sure you set the booktype to the proper media and burner type. US (NTSC)games typically have a SLUS_ file, whereas PAL games contain a SLES_ file. That is the easiest way to check.

Well I've confirmed that it's only the PAL images which don't work, the NTSC ones work fine. So I'm assuming that the problem is my mod-chip doesn't bypass region codes or whatnot. Is this correct or could there be some other easy fix to getting PAL DVDs to work? Thanks.

I have played many PAL games on my NTSC PS2. All you need to do is rip your PAL games to your PC as an ISO file, patch the file with an app called "ps2_pal2ntsc_yfix", and burn it onto yer favorite disc. I found ps2_pal2ntsc_yfix at SKSapps.com, but you can find it anywhere in the scene. There's a few tutorials around, just search the forums.

Aright, I tried using the ps2_pal2ntsc_yfix and it did the trick, although the screen was down a bit too far, but still, it worked. Is this what normally needs to be done with PAL games? I though mod-chips were supposed to make it so you could play both PAL and NTSC games hassle free? or am I wrong about this? Thanks.

I'm not sure about mod chips, I've never used one. I did ask a friend, and it seems that for the most part, you cannot play both formats right away. Japanese TVs have way more resolution than ours, so they code games to work on theirs. The Y-fix changes the game to play on US TVs. Not all Y-fixes are equal. Have a look at this thread. It will give you an idea of how to set the Y-fix offset for your particular game. This will help to center your screen.
So I don't know for sure, but i think mod chips don't let you play both formats, it just lets you play backup, or burned, games.
