I know this might sound like a jackass question and as simplistic as it sounds it is, but I need a new cable for my monitor and don't know what to buy! I have an LCD monitor and an HP tower if that means anything.

I've never had to buy a replacement cable and when I went to buy one online I saw several different versions. There were VGA & DVI among them.

What do I need?

Thanks for reading the most redundant thread ever!

if ur video card has a vga slot and so does ur monitor get the vga cable.

if ur video card has a dvi slot and so does ur monitor get the dvi cable.

if both pc and monitor have both get dvi because it is better quality or get the vga because its cheaper.

all vga are compatible with vga there are no two different versions or sizes, same with dvi.

Not so actually, there are many different types of DVI cables.
Assuming you don't have an oversized monitor (i.e. if your monitor is 24" or smaller) you can just get a DVI-D cable, provided that there's a DVI port on your monitor and graphics card (A large white connector). If one of them is absent, use a VGA cable (Small and blue). There aren't multiple types of VGA cables.

Ok, I have a 17" monitor and the connection on my monitor is blue.

I don't have or see a white connector as you mentioned. Does this mean the VGA is the way to go? Also, what about the pins, are there a specific number for the monitor? This is why I'm confused!

Yep, a VGA cable straight and simple.
