this is our first time backing up a dvd and could use some help. We are trying to backup shrek 2 and are using dvd43 to remove the copyright, and don't know how to proceed. we only have 1 dvd drive and assume we will have to copy the dvd to the computer temporarily and then onto a dvd.
1. is it possible to backup the dvd using only 1 dvd drive?
2. can we use our standard burning program? ahead nero is what we have. or do we have to use a special dvd program?
Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

Hi Tricket56
You can use Nero's Recode w/ DVD43 running in the background. Here's a guide for Recode - Recode guide.
Yes one drive will do the job. Most programs will store it temporarily while ripping then the drive will open when done ripping and you'll insert the blank.

Not a problem - post back w/ any problems.
Here's another free tool for breaking the copy protection - DVDFab HD Decrypter. You rip to your hard drive with that then open those files in Recode. It's still updated and will handle the movies that DVD43 can't.

another thing came up when we looked at the size of the dvds we bought to burn onto and the size of shrek 2, and its about twice the size of our dvds, and we'd like to have all the special features and such, so heres the question: will Nero's Recode compress onto the dvd or do we need another program to compress it?
again thanks for the help you guys are awesome :)

Yep Nero will compress it to fit on a single layer disc. So you're good there.
Most commercial dvd are on dual layer media so unless you burn to dual layer disc you'll need to compress it. Recode does a good job.

The more compression you apply, the less quality you will have. Apply too much compression and the DVD may not even play or look like crap. Most commercial DVD's will have files too large to fit on a 4.7GB single Layer DVD. The files have to be compressed. If you copy the movie only, and not the Entire disc, this will reduce compression, therefore improve quality. Try to keep quality at 80% and above. Otherwise, split the movie onto two single layer DVD's, or one Dual Layer DVD. When this is done, you can either copy the movie only or keep everything that was on the commercial DVD.

LOL Not sure.
After you told me this I opened my copy of DVDFAB PLATINUM, loaded my backup DVD of Mr.& Mrs. Smith. File size 4463. Then I opened DVD Shrink, loaded the same DVD. The file size was 4464. A difference of less than MB. Maybe someone else will come along with an answer for that, I do know. Does it do this with all your DVD's or just the one?
I ordered NERO 8 ULTRA EDITION from Newegg.com, it's on sale for $54.00.

Are you picking just movie only in Recode? Following the guide above?
Both should be about the same.
Can you post a screen shot of what Recode shows?

That's part of the reason - the audio.
But you're also using Nero digital. Is that the option you want cause it converts it a mp4 which most dvd players will not play.
Now if you using Digital to put Shrek on an iPod or PSP then you're fine.
If you want to burn to a dvd to play in a player then use one of the 1st 2 options in Nero.
The 1st option - Recode an Entire DVD to DVD - will do full movie and the 2nd option - Recode Main Movie to DVD - will do movie only.

Did Nero come w/ the drive or the pc so did you buy it say at a store?
If it came w/ a drive or pc you might just have a limited oem version.
What version of Nero are you using? Like 7.10.1.0 or 8.1.1.4?

Ok well we need which version of Nero you have - an update may fix this.
Like do you have Nero 6 or Nero 7.
Also did you buy Nero or did it come w/ say a dvd burner or the pc? The ones that come w/ a burner or pc are usually limited versions.
Also you can use Shrink (free)- since you have Nero - Shrink will use Nero's burn engine to burn. Here's a guide

Okay update Nero - looks like you have Nero. Update package 1 and package 2.
Here's a link - link.
If that still doesn't give you the options then use DVD Shrink instead.

Ok what's happening w/ Nero when you say it can't? Getting an error?
Try burning w/ ImgBurn. It's free and good. Here's a guide or burning the video_ts folder - link
