Hey guys. I love the great inside information tips that site provides. However, some of the information is misleading when it comes to blank DVD's.
I use all types of blank DVD+R's to backup my movies and I did not see a difference in any of them. Brands used: JVC, HP, Kodak, Phillips and the DVD+R media that everyone was warned to stay away from: Office Depot's Ativa. I even tried some DVD+R's from Dollar Tree (U.S.) called Konttac and there is no visible difference from the rest of the pack.
Just follow the great tips of burning from the pros in here and your projects should be fine.

That?s true to a certain extent; i've used a half dozen different kinds of blank media, generic and name brand. The question is how reliable will every burn be out of a pack or spindle.
I tried using staples brand dvd's and they played fine on my pc and higher quality dvd players. I've played the same movies on different older/cheaper dvd players and the playback was terrible, skipped frames, pixelated eventually cutting out completely. if you really want your backups to last and play on just about anything you're better off spending a little more and getting a higher quality more reliable brand of media.
Most of the brands you mentioned are of good quality. Over time most people tend to favor one brand of media or another based on past performance.

cleanface, have you done any quality scans on them with nero? Also in 6 months to a year they may or may not playback well ,its a gamble. Thats why we recommend Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim less longterm problems but its your choice. so i would say vvvvv

I use to think they where all the same and bought nothing but memorex because I use to use there casettes. But my backups where always acting strangely, I always blame the software or burner. But now I only use TY's and verbs only.
You need to do a quality test on your DVD media, you might be surprised. My memorex where checking out at 35% even though NERO would report that the burn was successful everytime. To me 35% isn't successful.
Blank CD's are basically all the same, blank DVD's are entirely different. The quality is all over the place.

You're absolutely correct. All the media you listed are Crap, IMO. Therefore, no differences among them....

The bottom line is how well they will play (or not play) in five years or more. If you only care about the recorded disc lasting a year or so . . it doesn't really matter what you use.
About six years ago, I used around 50 KHypermedia discs (2.4x DVD+R) Almost none will play anymore. The Verbatim discs that I also used are all playing just fine!

Yes, in a perfect world all media is the same. Unfortunately in the real world, that is not the case - I just got some Philips DVD+RW's by Optodisc, and my Panasonic DVR is unable to play them IF I burn them with my Liteon 1653. When I burn with Pioneer, all is fine.
There is plenty of incompatibility out there, and the quality of the media offered on the market varies a lot. Some devices are much more sensitive to media than others, Playstation 2 as an example.

People with quality dvd-rw drives usually don't have very much trouble with the lower quality media.
Problems occur later. Maybe you want to re-rip one of those kodak backups for another copy and run into the dreaded CRC error. Then you're in trouble. Then if you pass those backups around to all your buds and family members.Then the odds of them having playback issues will rise.
I have no trouble with the lower quality cmags,AML,UME,MBI-but I make sure keep the burn speed at 4x,compression reduced,reduced backup target,and nothing important on them.
Use nero's Disc Quality scanning program and see how those backups rate.

I have all of the original discs that my failing discs were copies of . . so it just means that I get to try out my newest burner . .
Almost all of my failed discs were created with a Plextor and a Pioneer . . I haven't had a backup that I made with any of my BenQ drives fail . . . yet. Of course I've only had the BenQ drives for 2 to 3 years . . .

I agree buying off brand media is very bad. I used to use memorex brand when i first started backing up dvds they coded out as cmc mag. About 1-2 years later they all statred to skip and kept coming up with disc errors. I then backed up same titles to verbatim discs and they have been great ever since. Use Verbatim! Not cheap media! It will end up costing you in the long run trust me.

Man, did I received a vicious butt chewing in here! I still have the teeth marks on my butt!
You guys were right on most of the media in here being crap, except for HP. I send my mother DVD's from time to time using the media listed and then some. Well, she also gave me a butt chewing! Her players are late model sony's.
I went to Office Max and got a 100 spindle of verbs for $25.00 bucks (U.S.). (Sale price)
Sometimes finding out the hard way, sometimes those are the best lessons to learn.

Good info to know! I've just got into all this DVD burning stuff about 2 weeks ago. Had good luck with Maxell then I thought i'd try to use the cheaper Dynex brand because it was on sale. That was a disaster!!! 3 out of 4 burns failed and the 1 that was successful pixilated badly on playback on the home dvd player.. Returned them and bought Verbatim and all's well again.. Blank DVD media is not created equal!

ouch! ..that's why i use the media in my signature, avoids the pain (from people and from frustration with burn failures)
