Dear Friends,
I have been facing a problem in my system since long and I have tried various possible combinations but still unable to resolve it. It would be great if someone can help me on the issue.

I have got an HP machine with:
HP Media Center M7480 (Win XP Home Edition)
Liteon dvd driver: SHW160 H6S (with an internal DVD+/-R/RW). The DVD writer came fitted along with the machine.

The below has been discussed with the HP Premium Support but of no use:
As soon as I insert a blank DVD (either -R, +R or -RW), the system restarts after maximum 10 seconds. I have tried removing the DVD writer driver from Hardware's Device Manager in Control Panel. The system then restarts and picks up the driver again. It works for a few days correctly and then the same problem starts again. This problem happens only with blank DVDs.

I have tried the following as well:
1] Tried to search for the latest Liteon driver on their website but it is difficult to find it on the website and also quite a lot of content is in Chinese.
2] Upgraded the system's BIOS software but no luck.
3] The Windows Updates are also up-to-date.
4] Borrowed an LG external LG DVD writer using the USB port. I did not install the LG specific software through the CD but the O.S. already picked it up. I still have the same problem and the machine restarts again.
5] I tried around 3-4 brands of DVD including Verbatim and Philips but the problem is persistent.

Considering that I need to use my DVD writer very frequently, this is causing a lot of hassle to me. So any help in this matter would be highly appreciated.

Do you have any packet writing software (InCD ?);software that lets you drag and drop files onto a DVD?
Perhaps booting into safe mode, to test, would help.

Thanks attar for your response. I have tried it in the Safe Mode and it does work fine. Can this be some system driver problem?

It's sometimes caused by a program which uses the burner.
If you feel confident about editing the registry, do a system backup then do this.

Click ?Start? ?Run? then type ?regedit? click ?ok?

Carefully, locate this entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

1 Highlight {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

2 and 3 Locate "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (these exact names) and 4 delete them by right clicking and 'delete'
Exit the registry editor and reboot.
Note that any software referred to in the filters (if the filters exist)may have to be reinstalled to function with the DVD burner.

Thanks attar, I did tried to delete "Upper Filter" and "Lower Filters" and exit registry editor and reboot. After reboot "Upper Filter" is disappear. Now I can only see "Lower Filter".
And I also forgot to do SYSTEM BACKUP in begaining.
If you can advise what to do.

Try to delete "LowerFilters' - it should not come back after reboot(unless a program is running that is causing the value to be recreated).

If the entry is gone, try the disk in the drive.

If the problem persists - and you know it works ok in Safe Mode, then something is running at boot time that causes the problem.
It may be the likes of a Virus Scanner or Nero, etc.

Install 'Startup Cop', temporarily disable programs (obvious names like Nero, Virus Check, printer tools, etc - Google for information on others) reboot and check.

From my list you can see there eight programs allowed to run at startup.
A virus scanner and a graphics module being obvious.

Thanks Attar
I have tried only your 2nd suggestion [dated 26/11/07, and it is work. Now dvd driver can read blank dvd and write without any problem. Computer is not Shut down any more.

I did not touch your 3rd suggestion [dated 27/11/07] because it was working from your 2nd suggestion.

I know after delete Lower Filter & Upper Filter and reboot but still Lower Filter come back, now computer is up running, I think it is no wise to do more work on that. unless it will effect some other places which is we did not know, please advise.
