Hi, just to warn you, i'm not very 'technical' in a computer sense, plus it's my first time on afterdawn (which i've always looked at for computer help). However, i can't seem to find anything on this problem.

Right, i'll describe my problem.

I've decided to get Utorrent (not for the first time, i had it on my main computer until i got this beast of a machine). Searched around for a good torrent to download... Ratatouillé? Never seen it, looks good... and it's by aXXo?! I downloaded it straight away, there were nearly twice as many seeders as leechers, looked at my download speed... 5kB/s...10kB/s...10kB/s...10kB/s. -_- 10kB/s? I used to be able to get 180kB/s... I looked on the internet and found my problem, my ports weren't open, i checked them too with an online port scanner. I read http://www.portforward.com and chose my router (Belkin router model number FD57321-4 i believe). I followed the instrctions and it came to the static ip bit. To cut a long story short, i can't get a static ip because my ISP don't offer it.

Is there any way to open ports without a static ip? It's really boring waiting 20 hours for a 1 1/2 hour movie to download.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks alot!

Also any help on configuring utorrent would be greatly appreciated. On a speed test, i had a download speed of 440 and an upload speed of 80 i believe. I might be getting an 8meg connection for christmas though.

noob on a computer, please don't use technical language ;) thanks.

I tried that before, and it just ended in more tears, my router is, in a word, rubbish. I keep disconnecting all the time now and i have to restart my router every half an hour or so now. When i changed my routers SSID under the netwprk connections i now get 'Belkin54g' and 'kevied' - these are both my router, and i don't know why it's happened. I wish i just got a professional to come in and do this but it costs £50 -_- (~$95-$100).

Are you able to acess Command Prompt through start>programs>accessories? If not, try this, scroll down a little: http://kb.iu.edu/data/ahse.html

Okay.. just done all of that, thanks for your help, not sure if it's worked because on my routers settings on 192.168.2.1 (belkin model: f5d7231-4) it says i'm running a dynamic connection in the internet settings, but how do you check if the port is open? Because i used this to check:
www.t1shopper.com/tools/port-scanner/
and it keeps saying that it's closed. Which is why i fiddled round with my connection and broke it in the first place, sorry if i'm whinging (not sure on spelling :S) but i am grateful for your help.

You shouldn't be showing a dynamic address in your router if you set it static. Did you uncheck "obtain ip address automatically" in Network Connections and does the correct address show in Command Prompt at ipconfig/all? For a port test, check it in options>speed guide in utorrent. Set a port that is over 10,000 and not the default at options>preferences>connection and uncheck randomize port. Use this speed test: http://www.speedtest.net/ and use the number closest to your upload speed at options>speed guide>connection type. Set Protocol Encryption too: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/395674 Edit: are you seeing private address, that doesn't mean it's dynamic.

My ip address and all the other settings have changed on the command prompt to the static ones. I've also noticed that dhcp now says no instead of enabled. I think i have made it into a static ip address, it might just be my router. Honestly, i think it's broken. It keeps disconnecting, so if i leave it on whilst i go to college, it disconnects and my torrents don't finish. Is there anyway to stop it from disconnecting or will i have to buy a new one, because it's extremely annoying.
Once again, i thank you for all your help so far and i've configured my utorrent. Also when i change my SSID on my router, should it come up with the old name and the new name when i search for wireless networks to connect with on the "view available wireless networks". When i change my name from Belkin54g to kevied, it always picks up both of the SSID's. I'd have thought it should only pick up one because i apply changes, not make a new one.
So for eg. I restore my router back to factory default, connect to it, apply security settings, then connect again, then change my SSID, and when i go to connect again, the old SSID and the new SSID still appear.

Are you on a college connection because they will block p2p, doesn't sound like it if you used to get good speeds. Not too sure on the disconnecting issue, contacting their support and reflashing it may help, don't know. As far as I know, changing the SSID shouldn't affect anything as long as it's changed on all wireless routers ahead of you. Try leaving it default, don't know much of it either. EDIT: you could try enabling both TCP and UDP in your router. TCP only seems to be recommended but I need both. Another thing to remember if you upgrade to a new ISP is that they may throttle torrents, check it out first.

Yes! I checked using the port checker on the utorrent checker, and guess what? It's open :] I'm now getting much faster speeds. Thanks.
