I have 3 different 478 pin processors that I wanted to switch around with on my motherboard. I just wanted to know if there would be any problem switching out processors, like conflicts with the HDD and such. I've never done this before, thanks.

Also, whats better a Celeron D 2.8ghz or a Pentium 4 2.8ghz?

I'm a newb, please forgive me for the dumb questions.

if the motherboard can handle prescott dye cpu's then should have no problem. a pentium 4 2.8ghz is better then a celeron 4 2.8ghz as the pentium has more ram cache then the celeron.

So by switching the Pentium 4 out and putting the celeron D in, this will NOT cause my MB to shut down permanently...right?

if the bios on the main board cant handle the processor it will read it at the max that it's written for

ie: take out 700mhz put in 900mhz but the max in the bios is 750mhz the computer will read and run it as a 750mhz

I am not sure but the D may stand for dual processor and if the bios isnt written for dual it may just not fire up (hopefully someone around here knows 4 sure)

Ok, its a Celeron 340 2.93ghz, sorry about that. And its in there now and it works fine. So the new question is.... Is the celeron 340 2.93ghz better than the pentium 4 2.80ghz? The Pentium 4 has a 512kb L2 catch, the celeron has a 256kb L2 catch...

they'll both run the same but think the pentium will be a tad faster because of the cache. the "d" doesn't stand for dual as i think it is referenced to the prescott dye for the celeron.
