I've been going through all of my DVDs that were burned more than 5 years ago. The manufacturer that is having the highest failure rate is Maxell with the MIJ discs coded MXL001 . . . second worst are the KHypermedia coded CMCMAGR01

My RicohJPN coded discs have been holding up pretty well . . .

I'll attest to the reliability of Ricoh media. Ricohjpn-R03 are very abundant in the memorex +16x spindles. I can't dog on memorex anymore.

Are those MIJ Maxells you speak of the Hitachi variety? I sure as hell hope not cause I stocked up on some recently lol.

The ones I have code out as MAXELL-002-00

Those are the Hitachi/Maxell discs . . .

Of course they are the 4x variety . . but I'll never purchase MIJ Maxell DVDs again!

I haven't gotten a hold of any of those maxell 001's in the +4x speed. I have burned quite a few of the -4x MXL-RG02.Some of the -4x Ritek maxells had disc separation on the inner hub. All my +4x maxells were Ricohjpn-R01 and I'll have to double check them.

All in all,Most of my burning issues was with the slower 4x speed media, including verbatim -4x. Sony 4x was horendous. The 8x and 16x media is a lot better now.

I really don't have to worry about purchasing DVDs for some time now. When KMart had the Sony 50 packs on sale, I went to Sears and bought out all of their MIJ +R 8x Yuden 50 packs. Then Circuit City had 25 packs of Sonys on sale. Again, I went to Sears. Turned out that between what they had in the back and on their shelves, there were 55 - 25 packs of +R 8x Yudens and I purchased waaay too many Verbs on sale at Office Max . . . Now the wife says that I can't purchase any more until I'm down to less than 500 . . maybe 1 or 2 years

Will packs of the the Ricohjpn Memorex DVDs have the MIJ designation? I'm interested in getting these if there is a good sale on Memorex in the future but only if there is a definitive way of telling that they are Ricohjpn and not CMC, AML, MBI crap.

Ricohjpn are made in taiwan. The last several batches-purchased from staples-the top side of the disc had small bubbles etched into them.

I've also encountered Ricohjpn-R03 on a batch that didn't have the etched bubbles. Only on the plus format. I don't know about the dash memorex.

Good to know. Thanks saugmon!

I'll probably grab a pack from my Best Buy during the next sale since their blank media stock gets cycled out fairly quickly compared to other stores.

just bought myself another 800 RICOHJPNR03 (in the Maxell guise with the real nice Gold matte finish) to add to the paltry 300 i had left in stock; these bad boys are only £12 for 100, had a real battle with myself to stop me buying even more

Bigtoxy!

Here's 1 batch--one of my brothers, which looks nearly identical to a verbatim +16x along with the (large bold white lettering on the inner hub= Bold-MEMOREX and Is it live or Memorex on the opposite side of hole) Very bold and easy to read. Right next to the center hub, small letters that are clear.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:RICOHJPN-R03-004]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [DVD-ROM]
Manufacturer Name : [Ricoh Co. Ltd.]
Manufacturer ID : [RICOHJPN]
Media Type ID : [R03]
Product Revision : [004]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x , 6x-16x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Put that disc beside a verbatim, and very hard to distinguish which one is the verb.

My last batch, which I thought had the etched bubbling,is more of an etched blocks in a symetrical pattern. Blocks are 1.5 mms square, shiny, rest of disc is matte. On the inner hub,the white lettering is significantly smaller,in small cap and only says: Is it live or memorex above and below the center hub.Next to the center hub, very small black code.
