avi to dvd playback problems

I am presently having prolems ripping avi movies on to a dvd - I am playing them back on my dvd players and after approximately an hour into the movie the film beings to 'spike','stutter' and lose frames.
this is happening using different types of disc as well as different ripping methods (i have the problem when i both convert to Vob files as well as ripping straight from avi)
I use various software as well from nero, convertXto dvd, avi dvd burner and shrink
My burner is a liteon and i have had it for a year

Try using 'Verbatim' media and burn at 4x - see it it makes a difference.

BTW is the burner firmware up to date?
