Forgive me if this isn't the proper forum to post this. I've been happily burning CDs and DVDs until the last week, when all I get is coasters. I have Nero 8, with the latest update, as well as DVDFab Decrypter, DVDshrink, and ImgBurn.

I thought it might be a conflict between my programs, but I'm wondering if it might be my burner. I have an external Kanguru Quicksilver burner, about 5 months old. I've been finding that frequently the drive is not recognized; I've switched USB ports with the same result. I have to play around with plugging and unplugging the power and USB cable. I reinstalled the original drivers, and checked for updates (none).

When I run Nero, it stalls about 1 minute into the burn; I cannot exit without powering the computer off with the button. I've gotten a DMA error once or twice, but checked my IDE channel properties and everything is Ultra DMA mode. It plays DVD-roms fine.

I've posted my Nero log below, if it's any use. It'll show where I powered off; the program was hanging for quite a while. I'm loathe to uninstall and reinstall my programs if it's a burner issue. I use TDK for my cds, with no prior problems with their quality, and Verbatim for my dvds.

Again, I'm sorry if this was the wrong place to post.

Thanks,
Liz

Hi,

I have a Dell Dimension 2400. I did as you suggested, and unplugged the computer. My burner is at least recognized again, but still having trouble with Nero. I reposted a new thread with an updated log.

Thanks very much for your advice.

Thanks, Quickdraw,

All should say, device is working properly. We don't want anything saying, UNKNOWN DEVICE. No yellow exclamation marks, no red x's, etc.

All devices are working properly

Are you using the latest version of DVDFAB HD DECRYPTER 4.0.1.4 Beta? Have you had more than one version of DVDFAB HD DECRYPTER on the HDD? The reason I'm asking is to see if there may be some unremoved file fragments causing a corruption with the Decrypter. The file your trying to copy, is it on a commercial DVD, if so, what title, or is it a file on the HDD? Have you tried a different DVD?

I'm using DVDFAB v 4.0.1.2, and I believe this is the second update I've had. The problem is, I'm having trouble burning an audio cd, not a dvd. I'm using ImgBurn for DVDs; I was getting DMA and other errors with Nero. Perhaps Nero & ImgBurn cannot cohabit peacefully??

What application are you using in NERO?

The freeze occurs in Nero Express. I can burn *one* cd ok, but when I attempt to burn a *new project*, I cannot get throught it without the application freezing; I cannot shut it down even with task manager. I have to unplug or hold down the button on the computer.

Is your copy of Nero 8, store bought, or downloaded?

Downloaded, and paid for :-) I did a complete uninstall, and used the cleanup tool, reinstalled the latest version, to no avail.

What kind of blank media do you use?

Audio TDKs from Costco, and have used them for several years with no prior problems

How old is your USB DVD BURNER?

June 07.

Any other USB devices on the system?

Mouse, printer. Occasional iPod and camera.

Are you using a USB HUB or do you connect directly to a USB port?

Connect directly.

When was the last time you ran DISK CLEANUP and DISK DEFRAGMENTER. Should be done frequently, when making DVD backups. How old is your computer, three years?

I defrag and cleanup about every 1-2 weeks. The computer will be 3 in March (how'd you guess;-) I added 1g of RAM a couple of months ago.

Your second log indicates this

Quote:
CDR code: 00 97 17 06; OSJ entry from: Moser Baer India Limited
Not the best quality discs, I'd try Verbatim or Sony

Quote:
Burn process failed at 48x (7,200 KB/s)
Try slowing your burn to 32X

QuickDraw,

Just burned a DVD using DVDFabHD Decrypter, Fix VTS, DVDShrink, and ImgBurn. No problems. Come to think of it, burning CDs with Nero was going fine, until I started burning DVDs and got DMA errors; that's when I started using ImgBurn. Do you think I should uninstall DVDFab, Shrink, and ImgBurn, then Nero, and reinstall everything? I've got the cleantool from Nero; is that sufficient?

Did the whole USB driver uninstall, and got myself in a bit of a pickle; lost the use of my mouse, didn't have a spare serial one, and not too great at remembering keyboard commands ;-) Up and running again.

Gwendolin,

Thank you. I didn't realize these were poor quality; I've used them for years with very few coasters; maybe 1 or 2 out of 100, and I always burned CDs at 48x. In any event, I've done a couple more test runs and this is the way it goes: I open Nero Express using StartSmart, select the tracks, copy, burn, then "Finish". That CD always comes out fine. Since I usually burn a number of them at a time, my next choice is "Start a New Project". It is at that point that Express freezes; I can't get out even using Task Manager. I have to shut down the computer. I can only burn 1 CD, than I have to reboot. Can't burn DVDs at all using Nero.
