PC DVI to HDMI HDTV resolutions

Hi, I've got myself an ATi Radeon 850 with DVI out. I've plugged the DVI to HDMI adapter into the card and connected a Samsung 32" 720p HDTV to the PC. My problem is this:

If I set the ATi software to use DVI in 720p mode the desktop is shown slightly too large on the TV and I loose the edges. Colours are good but it's not what I'd call crisp. Inversely if I plug in the VGA cable the picture is perfect at 1280 x 768 but the colours are not very good.

Anyone know what is going on here?

the DVi connection is giving you overscan which is very typical of this connection and hardware. There should be overscan compensation settings in the ATI desktop management software (there is with Nvidia Anyway)which effectiveley allows you to "shrink" the image displayed so it all fits on the screen.
I use a VGA connection but do not experiance dissatisfaction with the colours.
Have you tried another vga cable. There a several grades and some are not fully wired. Maybe that would help.

Is there any difference on the GPU playing HD movies via VGA or DVI?

I'm Not sure. I havn't used my DVI connection.
I would guess that if your TV can support at least a HD resolution over VGA (1280 x 720p) or preferably the native resolution of your panel (perhaps 1366 x 768) then I guess you could display HD just as well.
Afterall, people display HD over component inputs and those are analogue, just like VGA.
