Yea, the dell support isn't great at all, since they're all in India...
But anyways, is the Sata actually plugged in to the mobo? Can your BIOS see the sata?

You may want to start with the hard drive diagnostics.
When you start the computer you see the Dell logo
Press the F12 key.
This will bring up a menu
Towards the bottom of the list you should see
The option to select the IDE diagnostics.
Run this it will take a few minutes.
If it comes up with an error code write it down and call
Dell tech support, explain the steps you took and the error code.

How to install the drivers.
Boot the windows cd
As it starts up there is a status bar
at the bottom of the screen.
It will dispay a message that says
To load third party driver hit the F6 key.
Just follow the prompts.

try disconnecting it and reconnecting the wire. its probably loose. dell computers are suppose to pick up the hdd without drivers. it could also be a faulty drive. were you having trouble with it before you wiped it out?

On the above points the drive was never picked up only when a used flopy driver.
:Last crash cost me £40 at AW computers in Dundee even he had a hard time with the drivers.
All through this the HD was not working but it did appear in some screens in set up.
I realy need a boot disc for this.
now I have to go get drivers for all the other stuff one at a time can you give me a solution.
Can I just say may old pc from AW boots every time you can kick its ass and all you need to do is format and away it goes.
Dell what are you playing at.

Indeed. Dell make decent quality products. As for the support, their returns are quite good I think, it's just tech support they're lacking, and why not just come here instead?

I agree you are always better off just asking for help in the user forums be it Dell's are here.

OK now I have it up and running.
In the boot it stops and asks for F1 or F2 how do I resolve that.
The drivers bit is a total mess how can I make a disc to save loading all these drivers one by one and if this can be done would it be worth partitioning again and making a small partition for these drivers.
could any one tell me from the driver page what I need to run the pc and what is not realy needed.
As for some of the above they have obviously never had to fix a Dell from scratch.

I can assure you, it will be exactly the same with any other company. As for the drivers, that'd be the smart thing to do. A separate partition, while it would be good, would be very difficult to make on a drive you've already installed windows on. It may be worthwhile making a backup CD or copying the drivers to an additional or external hard drive.
As for needing to press F1 at startup, that suggests there's been an error. What does it say before demanding you press F1?

No, far from it. Dell are much like any large corporation, their tech support is pretty awful unless you're making a warranty return, in which case it'll be very good, assuming you paid an absolute fortune for a care package.

I will look at the F1 thing for the next time I am on thanks
The bit I am having a problem with is what I need to run the pc as the driver names are not enough for me to understand I ended up with SATA RAD programs running that are for diagnostic use .
I also had to disable the onboard sound card so that the sound blaster would work. It is all a bit messy.
The pc is working OK now but I want to make a plan for the next time.
I could only get the drivers in on a flopy after format, is this how it should be done.
