Hello all.
I'm just getting ready to get a DVD burner and I know I want to burn DVD's that are able to play in most DVD players. ((I know it being able to play in the players depends on the disc.))
I want something fast, but it doesn't have to be at light speed, as long as it's dependable I'm happy.
It needs to be External since I have a Toshiba Laptop.
Price range is anything up to about $150.
And if possible it needs to be able to burn .avi and .wmv files.
I'm sure you guys will see me here when I can't find out how to burn the DVD's...=]
Thanks in advance.

Hi Artreyu
Check out the LiteOn - great drives. Here's a few from Newegg - link.
I'd go w/ the SHW-160P6SU.
It will burn all types formats - just need the software to do it like Nero or ImgBurn etc.
I'll move this thread to the correct forum too :)

Sorry Binkie,
As you see I'm new to this. =]
If I buy this and it doesn't work can I send you the bill?
XD just kidding, that's what receipts are for.
Thanks anyways.
If anybody has any others I'm not going to buy it today or anything.

lol - if it doesn't then somethings wrong w/ the user :D
LiteOn's are good - I have 3 of them :) Not to say there can't be lemon here or there :)
Use good media too like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or made on Japan Sony, Maxell or Fuji. Burn at half of the rated speed.

Find a BenQ DW1650 or DW1655 , if you are into LightScribe, and when you find either, come back and tell us where you found them. :wink:

YES!!! I'll drive the getaway car so you all can stock me some. LOL
I take consolation in the fact that I put a DW1650 in the kids PC when they were plentiful and it still only has less than 10 burns on it. I'll steal it next time I need another (have 1640, 1650 in my machine) and give them the new one.

@Artreyu
You can usually find a 20x LiteOn DVDRW in a black enclosure for around $70 at WalMart; I picked up two for Christmas gifts.
@GrandpaBW
No more Benq; LiteOn swallowed them up. But their new drives are using a lot of the Benq's technology. I have a LH-20A1P and it works. If you really want pure Benq it will cost at eBay or some people @CDFREAKS have vBay (I think there is one for sale right now). If you find some old stock maybe and let me know! LOL
Burn On,
Russell
PS. To: Santa
I would like a Benq DW 1640,DW 1650 and Plextor PX-716,PX-760 all new in box for Christmas.LOL Who am I kidding; I'd be happy with low burns working used!
Merry Christmas

Yeah, I knew about the BenQ drives being bought out. The 1640 actually handles DL burning much better than the 1650 and 1655, but I would still take the latter two, if they could be found at a reasonable price.
