Sorry if this is in the wrong section but i couldnt find another relevant thread. I normally hang out around the xbox 360 section and am not too clued up on pc repairs.

my pc has suddenly died on me and am not sure what needs replacing on it.
when i turn the switch on at the back (before i even press the power button on the front) there is a really high pitch whining noise.
the power button does nothing now so all i'm left with is a metal box that makes an annoying noise.

has this happened to anyone else before or does anyone know whats wrong with it? i'm guessing the PSU is dead but would rather have clarification before buying a new on.

cheers for any input in advance :-)

It can only be the motherboard or the power supply. As a precaution I'd say replace the power supply anyway.

Make sure that PSU is at least the same rating as the one you had before. An under-rated PSU could cause more problems.

Well theres not many moving parts in that box of electronics

usually only three fans...cpc fan, power supply fan, case fan

of course didfferent computers have different arrays ie: two case fans

i would take the side panel off and listen to see what fan it's coming from and replace the fan (about $8)

if it's the fan in the Power supply unit then replace the whole unit

some times it's just a loose fan against the fan blades

keep in mind your problems may be more than one issue but dont panic cause they may just be to very minor things...computers are sensitive

bring more info

good luck

A wire trapped in a fan doesn't make a high pitch whining noise, trust me. I've done it enough times.

replace the psu as it is done in. if have another psu that is lower in wattage then use it & plug it to motherboard & not the drives as just want to see if motherboard will post or not.

Depends how fast the fan is, typically you can only get sounds like that from tiny, high speed fans.

it is 1 of the psu transformers that is causing the squeal, not the fan & a wire.

Agreed. I've heard this before several times, it's the electronics.
