Help with ripping DVD (quality issues)

Ok so this is all very new to me and I am having some problems.
I just purchased aimersoft DVD Ripper program and what I am looking at doing is putting my whole DVD collection an a NAS (d-link dns-323) which I still have purchase. then I was going to pick up an XBOX to use XBMC with and play it on my 46" LCD.
Ok so here is the first problem I am having I tried ripping some of the DVD's that I have and the quality is really bad. I tried different formats like .vob, Xvid, H.264 .. But when I try to play it back on my computer it looks pretty bad and stutters.
Here is my computer setup if it matters- C2D overclocked to 3.4ghz, Nvidia 8800gts 640mb, 2gb of ram, 37" Westy 1080p Monitor.
I am using Windows Media Player 11
Please help I just want to be able to rip all my dvd's to watch on a XBMC so what format would work the best for quality. Is the software I purchased the problem (Aimersoft)?

One of your problems is WMP. Try VLC player and see if it stops the stuttering.

Ok I just tried the VLC player and it still looks pretty bad very blocky and stutters.. Now when I tried the one I ripped with the H.264 codec it played pretty good on the vlc player but it took like 4hours to rip it? is that normal?
