Hi. I recently ordered a Fliptop with Swap Magic from PS2Cover.com. (Do not EVER buy from there.) After hassling them through the bank to send me my stuff, they ended up refunding me and sending the products to me as "gifts." However, instead of Swap Magic, they sent me a crappy "Ultimate Swap Collection" disc. Unlike Swap Magic, I have to insert an original PS2 DVD larger than the game I'm trying to boot in order to play it.

I have been able to run games with minimal success.

So far, I've used the following medias:

TDK 16x DVD+Rs: Runs fine until it freezes after trying to go to the actual game after the opening menus.
Memorex 16x DVD+Rs: Ran perfectly fine for a week or so, but now games will rarely go past the menus.
Sony 16x DVD+Rs: Make really really loud noises while running, run really fast, and make scratching sounds. Rarely actually boot up the game and when it does, it freezes on loading screens.

The only thing I can think of to do now is to try DVD-Rs, or order a legit Swap Magic.

The original discs I've been using are mainly Final Fantasy X, and sometimes Final Fantasy XI. My Final Fantasy X is the biggest game I have, but it has quite a bit of scratches, though last time I checked, it runs flawlessly on its own. Could that be a problem?

I've burned all my games at 4x speed using DVD Decrypter.

Games I've been trying to run are:

Haunting Ground (Ran perfectly. Memorex and TDK)
Soul Calibur 2 (Had a bit of skips when I was using Bully as an original PS2 disc before switching to FFX, then it ran nicely. Memorex)
Monster Rancher EVO (A lot of skips. Music would cut in and out. Memorex)
Fatal Frame 2 (Would rarely boot up, and when it did, would freeze on loading screen. Sony)

I have a "fat" PS2.

I've also tried swapping in an original game, and it runs fine.

Any advice? I've heard that DVD-Rs work best for fat PS2s, but I really would like to be sure before wasting more money on media that won't work.

DVD-R are best yes, and if you have to use DVD+R, then make sure to set the Booktype to DVD-ROM.

Okay. Thank you! I'll be buying some DVD-Rs tonight. Will report back with results!

Okay, I bought Sony DVD-Rs. So far, they still click. I don't think it's my PS2, as Sony disks are the only disks that click in my PS2. Memorex and my original PS2 games spin just fine. Not to mention the hole in the middle of the disks feel weird and oddly smaller than my other disks. I'm going to try one more game before calling it quits again until I get a good idea of what to do. I'd crack open the PS2 and clean and readjust the lens, but I'd really not like to resort to that until I know it's a good idea. :S Any more advice?

What I'm thinking of doing if this doesn't work is to buy Verbatim DVD-Rs, clean and readjust the lens, buy an actual original Swap Magic, and that's about it.

Please help, anyone? I have so much wasted media now, it's driving me crazy :< I don't want to spend this much moneeeey.

Well Swap magic is probably better, but really its just one less swap you have to do, which is nicer. So I am wondering if your noise with just the Sony Disks is the same thing I had with my fliptop on a V7.
I had to put a little weight on it to read the disks properly.
Now after following this guys post: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/79/25025#3328227
My post is at the bottom if you scroll down in that thread.
Mine is better now, and I only have to put some weight on it sometimes, and just in the right spot. I actually use a tape measure and sometimes with some DVD I have to either put it in the middle or near the lower right hand part of the cover. And then some other DVD play just fine.

I opened up my PS2 and tried to do what the guide stickied says about stuttering disks, but there's no gear there to twist. :S

There's also stuff protecting where the reset/eject buttons are, nor are there any screws around there. =/

I have a v10 (I think. Maybe v9) PS2. I assume they'd be different for each model.

Anything else? x_x

Well its either because of the fliptop or its your laser. But if other disks play fine, I would tend to think its the Fliptop.
It explains in this guide #73 & #74.
And in this guide it shows how to clean your laser, etc.
But Sony DVD-R are good media as far as I am concerned. I play them fine in both my V14 and V7. But maybe your Version likes something else. Verbatim are also good disks.

Yea I believe they kinda screwed you over with that "Ultimate Swap Collection". Never heard of that. But I believe you should do what you planned. Get the Verbatims, adjust the laser, get a actual "Swap Magic" and go from there. I STRONGLY advise you to not use so many bad media DVD-R's. They do affect the ability of your laser in the long run so I believe just got with your plan. And if you do ever get that "Ultimate Swap Collection" to work right then it could just be a backup in case your Swap Magic goes bad.

Thanks for the input!

I've messed around with adjusting the laser a bit with minimal luck, but I'm going to fool around with it more tomorrow, as I'm extremely tired right now.

Not really sure if this will help but I was having the same issue once before where my PS2 wasnt playing any burnt material. A friend of mine came over and jus opened my PS2(and I literally mean just pressed the open button) and slide the laser area down then back up to the top. I wasnt sure if it would work. A few days later I just tried it and it worked. I'm not sure if was coincidence or he actually fixed it but it worked so just passing on the news.
