I just bought Philips DVD-R discs. I actually upgraded from the Nexxtech (Circuit City) brand (which work great). So I bought these Philips DVD-R's and they skip all the time. Actually, I'll be watching a movie I burned and the movie will "freeze" for a couple seconds, then start back up or sometimes go back to the main menu. I have a Philips DVD player, so surely these discs should work find in the player. All other media works fine in the player. What should I do? Should I go back to my Nexxtech dics that worked fine in the first place? HELP!!!

Go with what works for you. I personally only use Taiyo Yuden from Japan. But when I first started I used cheap media and had poor results. There are many tricks to burning, one of which is making sure that you do not burn to the edge of the DVD. This can cause a lot of problems.

As I said, I like Taiyo Yuden, but I also like Verbatim and Ritek. I normally buy in large quantities when they are on sale. I buy all of my media from supermediastore.com. You can see a list of the DVD's they carry. They will only carry top of the line and will not sell you anything that is not quality media. http://www.supermediastore.com/dvdmedia.html

Sign up for their newsletter and you will get adds by e-mail. That is how I know when my TY's are on sale. I normally buy 200 at a time. When you are getting quality media for around .22 cents a disk you can't go wrong. I've never had a bad burn with TY!! With TY I set my output ratio at 4450 instead of 4435 which is what is normally required. Good luck!

Download this free program:

Insert backup/open dvdidentifier/select drive that the backup disc is in/click identify/click clipboard/post back-rightclick copy and we'll tell you what they are.

Do the same to a Nexxtech backup and post back.

Dvd players can be picky to certain media. When switching media, quality may also vary. Try slowing down the burn speed for those Philips. Keep the backup target size under 4300 mbs.Keep compression to a minimum.

Philips is 1 brand that won't even consider, even if they were under 10 cents each. When you upgraded, you actually downgraded-your philips player just told you so.

Just because the brand name of the media doesn't reflect how that brand of dvd player will work in the same brand of drive. I got a magnavox el cheapo, but wouldn't even consider using magnavox media.

Most brand named media is outsourced. That means up to 4 or so different manufacturers can make the same brand/format/and burn speed media. Maxell and Memorex are notorious for that.

Media has MID codes. Dvdidentifier will tell you that code. Codes can change when switching to a different spindle of the same brand. That's why Taiyo yuden and Verbatim are highly recommended.
