Optorite dvd-r 2.30 bad flash!!

sup guys i try to update the optorite to 2.30 and it worked fine, but after clicking ok to reboot i clicked to update again and it didnt finish... i thought it would damage my drive so when i restarted i saw that the new version was on, 2.30... anyway i didnt see any inmediate change and stupidly i flashed it again and now my dvdr is a heavy paperweight... bios doesnt recognize and it has a green light always on... anyway to reflash it? anyone of u has been able to solve this? so i dont have to rma the drive? is difficult cuz i dont live in usa.... thanx in advance

Hi mate i have just updated to frimware 2.30 and same thing has happened light on all the time and tray stuck oot, hope someone in this forum can help us let me know if you find anything out and i will do the same.

What model Optorite are you guys flashing? Mine went fine. but I also used the DOS version of the flash utility. It seems to be more "stable".

Hi Guys,
Got the same error as you. I have the DD0203 model and tried to upgrade from the 2.25 to the new 2.30 firmware and ended up with a paperweight. I have so far managed to at least restore power and get the drive recognised I BIOS by moving the factory jumper from its present location over to one space to the left.
The jumper would look like this initially

and now it looks like this

Seeing that the BIOS recognises it, but windows doesn't, i just have to find a DOS boot disk to see if i can flash from within DOS now.

depending on your windows i use Xp go to start-then run then type Cmd this puts you in dos mode, and try and flash as instructed in optorite web site, you will need to put fimware and flash program on floppy disc also then try and flash,its to late for me i have RMAed it back claiming power fault loss just have to wait and see no let me know how you got on. Really hopes this helps, i have just ordered Pioneer 106d alot better drive.

Ok I got the problem figured out. For the DD0203 when the bad firmware flash occurs, you lose power to the drive together with reading any discs (as expected).
If this happens you need to follow these steps to get the drive to work again.
1. Download a previous firmware version (I used 2.25) from http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=60 . Download the DOS version and put that firmware on a diskette. Next create a DOS boot disk (please use win 98 or a version that supports CD drive) and then shut down the machine.
2. Open the machine and take a look at the back of the optorite drive. All the way to the left of the drive you will see a jumper setting for factory use only. The setting will look like this

The pair all the way to the right is jumpered.
You need to move the jumper one space to the left, so that it would look like this now.

3.Power on the machine and make sure the BIOS is recognising the drive; it should. Next put the boot disk in the drive and wait till the command prompt appears. Once the prompt appears, insert the firmware disk in the floppy drive now.
4. Type DV2FLASH DV2_225.BIN and then press enter. It should go through the firmware flash phase. Please do not shut off machine! When flash is finished power off machine.
5. place the jumper back in teh original position on the back of the optorite drive and power on. It should work

Coblck: the CMD command is not DOS. DOS is an operating system. The CMD command is a 32 bit command line interpreter.

BTW PAL dv2flash is for windows, in dos we use dvflash, hope u answer me soon, cuz at least now my drive get past booting, although it doesnt recognize it yet...

You're right. It is DVflash. I got it mixed up, did you at least get the drive to recognise in BIOS?
I have a DD0203. What model do you have because the link does have a firmware in version 2.25.
Make sure you are not looking at DD0201

I now realized what i did. I used the DOS DVFLASH program with the windows file (DV2_225.BIN) and it worked. SO maybe you can try that as well.

I will contact you through msn tonight or so, and hopefully get the drive up and running.
With regards to your pc, you were saying that it boots but doesn't recognise the drive. Have you already gone through some of the steps like changing the jumper on the drive already?
You may have to go into BIOS and allow the BIOS to redetect the drive again.

I got my DD203 around September of this year. It worked for the first few compilations, but after that it stopped working. I can't remember if I ran a firmware update or what, but for whatever reason it stopped working. I had it sent in under its warranty and I just received the drive back today. With extreme excitement, I tested the burner. Didn't work.. tested it again.. and again.. with different software. I am using PRINCO DVD-R, which worked before the drive "broke" so they should still work. Does anyone have any idea why my drive mysteriously stopped working? Could it be some simple setting in my operating system that somehow got changed by the installation of another application? Any input is appreciated! Thanks..

Gotta the same problem flash 2.30 went wrong and now my dvd is dead.
The bios does not recognize it. Worst i do not see any green light in the front.
Do you know a dos tool that can force the flash through ide. Someone has talked of Pfmash but i did not work
change the jumper factory does not work. I have discover that this jumper is used to enable dma.
So to move to one left position does not mean anything.
Any information concerning the chip flash inside and the factory settings before i ask for a rma...........

If the factory setting is used to enable DMA. How can you know that if the drive is dead?
When you switched to Jumper 4 did the drive come on and was it deteced in BIOS?
Btw DMA would be controlled through DOS and windows and it would be set in Device manager under the IDE controller. By default the drive is set to use DMA. I have found that when the drive is dead (no power to the drive at all), then switching to jumper 4 restores power and allows you to flash in DOS mode.
Also the drives i haev worked on were manufactured on or after June 2003. From what i have seen, one drive that was manufactured b4 that date did not work.What model drive do you have btw?

The worst thing about this drive is that the manufacturer does not even state what those jumper setting are for and what the firmware upgrades even do. I know the upgrades make the drive more compatible with DVD+/-R, but they don't state which brand or what speed or anything.

When you guys flash the DD0203 dead with 2.30 firmware, was it all with the Window flash? Or in some of the instances, even the DOS flash can render it useless?
Also, do you guys know if I suspect my drive's current firmware not working perfectly (after an original Window flash), can I flash it again in DOS with the same firmware version, or I have flash it to a higer version?

I did a windows flash to upgrade to 2.30. My drive died because I accidently flashed it twice. I believe that you can flash the firmware with older or recent upgrades, it wouldn't really matter. I went from 2.30-WIN to 2.25-DOS to 2.30-WIN.
I can't be sure if the DOS flash would render it useless.

My drive is dead too. When it's finished flashing, you'd think that clicking Ok would be the logical thing, yes? No, it reflashes the drive again and it kills it.
My PC won't boot with the drive plugged in now. It never gets past 'Detecting IDE devices'. If I only plug in the power cable the drive still stays totally incactive. The tray doesn't even draw in. Complete paper weight.
Moving the jumper doesn't do anything. I've tried all positions, no luck, it still isn't detected in the BIOS in either of my PCs. Any ideas?

I have seen somewhere a picture that explains that the Fith jumper is to enable dma. But the Fourth one i do not know. Anyway my drive was built after June 2003 actually July. There is a factory code 2 on the stick above with A2110
I have killed it through windows. as you did click on ok again and the flash restart and my drive has disapeared from windows.....
Do you know a flash tool like MTKFLASH for this

This link demonstrate that the 5th jumper to the right is to enable DMA.
So may be you have killed your flash but not enough as us and you were able to make it at list recognizable by the ide channel.
I think my flash has also killed the bootcode it looks like with GSM mobile. when you kill the boot code your phone is also dead and does not start. Worst sometime you are compelled to change the PCB

Just flashed my drive to 2.30 via DOS. Everything went fine. Very much relieved.
Optorite has taken the DOS version of 2.30 off their web-site, but one can email them for it. That's how I got mine.
It appears that the DOS flash is the way to go.

i tried pstokes told me and it didnt work, maybe my problem is different from him cuz there was no light on at all in his optorite, but since mine died it keeps a green light always on... anyone else has my problem? and if u were able to fix it tell me please...

Sorry to bring up an old topic, but I've been looking for answers for days and have still to find any. I have the same problem as a chap above, and I even PM'd him to see if he got a fix for it.

For a while my CDROM stopped working too, but I managed to tinker and get that working. Has anyone found a solution who had this problem, and if not, what did they do?
