Hello,

I have a question for the GC gurus :)

My PAL dol 001 GC vipered/bios v1.2
with my drive dated(created) on 2001/06/08(61),
on princo write once mini-r burned on LG4163B @ 2x

gives me DRE, ON game or on menu after 10 to 50 minutes with POT from 160-400 Ohm(NOT on all games;almost all.Zelda 4 swords i.e. or SC2 was ok).

I had qoob also on my other GC (SAME MEDIA/BURNER/SPEED/POT) with no probs.I couldn't believe viper was useless, so I installed to the ABOVE Vipered system my other GC drive, DATED on 2002/08/23(61) with pot 205.
So...

JUST THE DRIVE WAS the cause of DREs. I have to mension that the old drive is out of the brand new box for 2 weeks!! The other that works with no DREs is over-used for 5 months now.

Is the only way to work with the other drive with no DREs only with other media(Ritek for instanse)???

Please explain me..!!

Thank you for reading...

I'm using Optodisc -R, but nothing works. I've tweaked my laser but with no success. So now i'm startin to wonder whether you can use -R disks?

-r discs are fine. we all use them on account of they're better than +r. media and burner are the big factors here, fellas. i had a liteon sohw 1633 burner and i tried princo and ritek big and small and only ever got 1 game to work. i bought an nec 3520a and have had no problems since. same media and everything.

i've not tried optodisc. check the stickies on maxconsole.net under the viper topic in the forums to see what people recommend.

Will this Laser tweaking also work for the Qoob Pro chip?

Laser tweak:
POT's value deppents ONLY on:

-burning speed
-media
-burner

It allows the GC drive "to read or not to read" :p the media (POT's value and limits can differ, depending on the 3 reassons described above).

It works with ALL the chips (It has nothing to do with the chip)!

DREs are the effect of the burner, the media and the speed (and the image if it is fu**ed up; wiped or badly fixed) ONLY!!!

BUT if you tweak your laser for the GC drive to read your copy , DOESN'T mean that you have chosen a GOOD:
-burner (like pioneer dvr-108;TOP, nec35xx;GOOD),
-GOOD media (ritekG04; THE ONLY-THE BEST)
-GOOD burning speed (2x usually for minis)!!!

CU later DUDES!

PS: This thread will explain you the technical cause of DREs:

Before I use this tweak I just wanted to know in how far this will reduce the laser's life.

How many years will it normaly run, because I don't use my gamecube very often, I think it wouldn't effect it at all.

Here are a few (mini) dvd-rs that already work without tweaking the laser, they aren't so expensive:

Princo Mini DVD-R 1.4GB 1x speed
Budget Mini DVD-R 1.4GB 1-4x speed (Not tested, but they say it works)
Ritek DVD-R 4.7GB "RIDISC" (RITEK G04, I think you guys already know that this one is the best)

Edit:

What I would like to ask too: Does it cares what kind of modchip you're using to get a specific dvd-r to work?

Ok, i have 2 laser units, one i set the pot from 640 down to 180, worked perfectly for about a week, then DREs, guessing bad laser cuz it was doing that before i modded it. Laser # 2: Boots all games, pot initially at 190 (tried lower, but put it up to 200), but gets stuck on certain games (usually on the opening FMV's), but if u let it chill for a bit, it looks like it gets past it, should I just leave it be? I think it'll boot my media everytime (i use fujis because i've never had luck with Ri-teks). Suggestions? From everything I have read on this post, looks like you all say that the best values are between 170 and 200ish and my tests would indicate that to be true, Maybe it doesn't like my media.. I have an NEC burner but i was using my sony one and it only lets you do 4x, maybe i'll use the NEC one from now on. Like I said, most of my games work all the way, but some freeze on FMV's so I guess I'll just be happy that they always boot.

I cover my bases...
1)Xbox w/xecuter 2.6 solderless
2)Ps2 (slim) w/DMS4 Lite
3)Ps2 V7 w/DMS4 Lite and 200 Gig Maxtor HDD
4)GC w/qoob pro

So you don't need to tweak the laser for ritek G04's?
How are the memorex discs compared to the ritek G04's? Do you need to tweak the laser for memorex's?

I have never used memorex dvd-rs yet, but this site is good for media compatibilty verses pot setting, this is what I have been using to approximate what setting I need to have. Hope this helps you.

I'm gonna mod my gamecube (001 EUR) in 2 weeks, with a Viper GC modchip and cobra 1.2 bios.

does it matter what dvd burner I use and how can you adjust the POT of your gamecube? and what does POT mean? and is every game compatibal?

i think any newish dvd burner ought to work well, some people say NEC's are the best, I have an NEC but its old, so I use my other one which is a Sony that supports dual layer, and it works well, I burn at 4x cuz thats the lowest speed it will allow me to burn. I use Fujifilm discs, and they work well usually. The POT is the setting the laser is at that determines the amount of power it draws to read the gamediscs, so for example if you have a setting at 200, which is about where most like it, its not drawing too much power, but at 160 it is, and COULD damage the laser over time...but it might read a game better. Don't mess with it until u try a game and it doesn't boot, or if it does boot, if it skips a lot. The pot is on the underside of the laser unit, u just unscrew the sheild under it is a little white screw that you turn, and you measure the Ohm setting with a digital multimeter, it should be between 150-680 or so, lower settings get better results, but higher settings prolong laser life. I killed one of my lasers lowering it from 640 to 175, it worked great for 2 weeks then just died. I should also note that at 640 it wasn't reading anything, so maybe it was just bad.

I cover my bases...
1)Xbox w/xecuter 2.6 solderless
2)Ps2 (slim) w/DMS4 Lite
3)Ps2 V7 w/DMS4 Lite and 200 Gig Maxtor HDD
4)GC w/qoob pro

hi. this question might have been asked already but is it possible to set the POT to low? will it do anything other that shorten the life of the laser?

Hey,

I just modded my launch Cube with a Viper chip (cobra v1.2 bios). I'm having trouble reading discs, so I tweaked the laser, I've tried a few different ohm levels and the only one that would make it past the intro logos (Nintendo, Activision, hudson etc). was on 122ohms. Now at different parts during each game I'll still get a DRE. The discs are full printable Databank mini's. Mario party and Mario Sunshine seem to be the worst, as soon as gameplay is about to start it crashes, True crimes makes it to about the first cutscene after gameplay and packs it in.

Any suggestions? 122ohms is lower than you're already meant to go from what I've read so I don't want to decrease it any further if it's going to do damage.

Alright I just lowered it to 97ohms, and it gets further but still crashes. Does this mean it's the media?

I have seen ppl go as low as 96 ohms, but I wouldn't, thats just asking for trouble, Usually, you want to keep it in the 160-200 range. If its not reading still at that range, then its likely the laser and you should replace it. I had one case where it was just a bad laser, I fixed it for a while, but then it gave me DREs always. Its sounding like the laser probably is bad. There is only one game I have that won't boot all the way, and thats Resident Evil 0, it gets stuck at the opening cutscene. The rest play great and mine is at 185 ohms. that is a safe level. But yes, you can go too low, I feel anything lower than about 120 is bad. I had 2 GCs to work with when i modded mine. So when one laser went bad, I had another.

I cover my bases...
1)Xbox w/xecuter 2.6 solderless
2)Ps2 (slim) w/DMS4 Lite

So I should buy a whole new laser and try in the 200ohms region? I think I'll try different media first.

you can't change that for Nero unfortunately. I just burn at 4x. Although most swear by Ritek, I use Fuji's and I have great luck with them. It could be the media, but i doubt it from what you've said.
