Another newbie with Illegal Disk. I've been following this thread while trying to determine what has gone wrong with my system. I was burning fine with 7.0.14b and two Lite-On drives, SOHW-1693S and 1673S. Several items in the system changed at about the same time. Upgraded to Nero7 7.0.54, upgraded to Norton Internet Security 2006.

I purchased the new SHW-160P6S just to be sure it wasn't some hardware glitch.

I back rev'd to the latest Nero6 with the same results. I cleaned out all the Nero files and installed the OEM v6 that came with the burner. No updates to it and it burned perfectly with all drives.

I then installed 7.0.14 and the results are listed below.

I also went back to some archived .ISO files that I have burned dozens of times, DVD demos. No protection or copyright and still got the Illegal Disk.

I have been burning with Memorex and TDK discs. The 160P6S burned fine at 16X with both when using the old OEM Nero6.

DMA is on.

I'm stumpped, frustrated and about ready to format c: and start fresh. Something is interferring with Nero and I can't find it.

There may be newer firmware for the new Lite-on but both my older units were up to date.

Nero starts with the leadin and appears to hang but the burner is still burining and after a few minutes give the illegal disk error. When looking at the DVD it has been written 30-50%. I have about 20 coasters in the trash trying to figure this out and up to this point I haven't had a coaster in probably more than a year...

Thanks,
Lee

These are the TDK's that you state you use along with the Memorex, I'm sure you know what mosts views of Memorex are here at AD and TDK doesn't fall far from that tree. I would suggest a better brand of media such as Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Sony, Fuji, Maxell ( made in Japan). But update the firmware first to see if things get straightened out.

Whoa horsey, that is way too high for those discs...try 4X and work your way up from there when you start getting successful burns.

Yup, your burner doesn't like those discs...a firmware update may take care of this. Everything else looks peachy.

The spindle of Memorex (50) was about 1/2 full, the TDK was a fresh one I got for testing. Well I won't argue about the quality and will be upgrading DVDs. I'll try to keep this short.

Nothing I seemed to do could get me burning. I completely removed 7.0.14 and used the clean tools from Nero. Installed the OEM v6 and burned the .ISO I had been working with, both Memorex and TDK but at 8x.

I flashed the 160P6 with the latest firmware and removed v6 OEM, then installed 7.0.54. Got the original DVD and ripped it to an ISO again. Same Illegal Disk error when trying to burn with 7.0.54

Tried an ISO from a movie I had ripped in the past. Same error. Ripped the movie again, AnyDVD and Shrink, AnyDVD DVD Decryptor then Shrink. Same error when burning.

Tried a different tact, ripped with Recode from 7.0.54 and AnyDVD but ripped to a NRG file.

The Memorex burned and verified at 12x with no issue, movie plays fine. Could only get 8x out of the TDK and the verify was iffy. The memorex verified smoothly with the reads progressing from 6.5x to 15.1x. After about 50% on the TDK verify the read rates started jumping around but it verified and played.

The 'crappy' TDK are being returned today, purchased locally. The 12x attempt with the TDK resulted in a partial burn, I don't know what else to call it. Looking at the bottom of the DVD, there were unburned areas.

I'm sure the two stores I get DVDs from have Maxell and Verbatim. I was very happy with the results I got with the DL Verbatims.

Bottom line, I still cannot burn a ISO file for some reason but using Recode to produce a NRG file is working fine.

I will take both your advice and upgrade the DVDs.

The inability to burn a ISO will remain a mystery for the time being.

Thanks for the help, I'll be sure to post any new developments.

Lee

I almost forgot, downloaded CloneDVD2 and tried to burn one of the ISO files without success. I did not try a fresh rip/burn.

Since you are willing to experiment, why not try to burn your ISO with Imgburn. It is a free proggy, can be found here: http://www.imgburn.com

Here is the result with Imgburn... Is there some virus or whatever that attacks ISO files? Actually the logs says the media is bad not the ISO file. This ISO was good in the past, several burns were made from it. I burned several movies last night from the spindle that this DVD came from. Burned at 12x also. If Imgburn will burn from files, I will try that next.

Thanks,
Lee

Is there a way to save or display the log file from Nero when the burn is complete? I didn't get back in time to copy the log. But that same DVD that failed in the previous posts burned and verified at 8x with Nero 7.0.5.4. Go figure?

This is your illegal disc, since you won't take my word for it, here is some reading for you:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/262544

Edit: My Nero asks me if I want to save the log after each burn.

The problem is not with the ISO, it is the discs you are using. While you may have gotten a few good burns with them, you can always count on some failures with them sooner or later you will get a failure. This is the problem with CMC Mag coded discs, the quality is so sporatic and poor that even if you get a good burn...6 months or better down the road, those discs will start to deteriorate and the dye will break up, leaving you with a useless backup.

I'll buy a spindle of Maxells or Verbatims today.

On the log, I'll see if there is a setting I may not have checked.

Thanks,

If you get the Maxell's make sure the label reads Made in Japan, it doesn't matter for the Verbatims.

Started a set of 12 hour shifts tonight, might be midweek before I can test new DVDs. The Maxells said Taiwan... and the Verbatims were VERY expensive. I'll try Best Buy. Maybe I shouldn't be so cheap :)

Checked Nero Burning Rom settings, saw nothing dealing with logs. The only log that appears, disappears at the end of the burn unless there is a problem. ??

Again, thanks for the help,
Lee

Just for info, Best Buy Online has the 25 spindle Verbatim DVD-R 16x on sale for $7.99. Ordered a few for store pickup.

Same for the 25 spindle of +R

Maybe we can put the final nail in this coffin this week :)

Your DMA is off on all these drives. But I am not sure if you can get it turned on using nvidia drivers, which will sometimes cause conflicts with Nero

What brand of media are you using. Make sure you are using a reputable brand Sony, Verbatim, Maxell or Fuji.

You don't need to upgrade Nero, you need to downgrade...
Quote:
Nero Version: 6.6.1.4
The version you are using has yet to have the wrinkles ironed out of it yet, revert back to version 6.6.0.18, it is a known working version. Get it here:

These should be TDK discs, and do not come highly recommended, try some Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Maxell (made in Japan).

Edit: I see arnie has beaten me to the punch...

Roxio is known to cause conflicts with Nero, but I don't see it's drivers listed in your log.
