Not 5 pages and still clueless. If you take the time to read the thread you will notice that we have not even got back to the original problem at hand. We have spent the last two pages cleaning her system. As soon as we have petjelly updated then we will get back to the original problem.

You can edit a previous post. Just click on what looks like a pen & pencil to the right of your post. No worries though - it's a few pages back.

Ok mrbenz04 - for this post edit it out and start a new thread.
In the new thread also tell us what media you are using.
I have a few suggestions for you but you need to start a new thread for your burn problem.

I still stand by my previous views.

Your OS is corrupted.

Only option is Format & fresh install windows.

You shall waste days trying experimenting to clean your OS but in vain, so better fresh install.

Btw learn imaging, so that in future if ever such a thing happens, you can restore an image over the faulty OS in 3 mins.

Good luck.

@Yezinki
With 2 final steps to take for a clean system, why go through all that? She would have to reinstall every application on the computer, reset all the customizations and lose all her downloads. Isn't it much better to at least try and save it if we can?

@petjelly
Turn off System Restore. Reboot. Turn System Restore back on.

Run System File Checker. Go to Start> Run. Type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes). It will ask for your Windows CD. If it will not read it, try it in Safe Mode. There will not be any window saying it's completed, it just closes.

After those steps try a blank CD and see if it will read it.

Post back the results.

For a new hdd as backup i would agree a fresh install would be best but for what's been happ'n here she has done the right thing in learning how to go about sorting out infections tho the original probs is more than likley as ozzy said and is a hardware issue

@petjelly
Yezinki has a point and i have done just that 2 years ago,it soon became apparent doing reinstalls are a pain untill i found out about this site URL http://radified.com/forum (if link fails google for radified forum),ghosting or cloning a hdd is easy and fun,more importantly it'll take around 20 mins to clone 40GB of data or an hour to clone around 100GB , compare that to doing a reinstall, then having to get updates etc which will take at least a day if your lucky,when cloning can have you backup and runn'n in an hour, i use norton partition magic 8.0 and norton system works 2004

EDIT: Contrary to what you first see once at the home site of radified just have a browse thru the place all will become apparent

When OS files have been infected by viruses, Trojans, worms etc.....they restructure all program files too.......even if you are able to clean your system in some weeks, which I doubt very much, the OS wont function smoothly, giving unexpected errors....the options you have, is either a friend to come over & do the cleaning stuff, provided he/ she has some computer know how OR to format & fresh install only 1 OS....either XP Or Millennium....& after all updating take an image & store that image on some inactive partition of yr machine?s drive.....online u?ll never be able to get yr issue solved unless some smart member makes a house call to rectify the issue.......my 2 cents of advice & experience!!

Good luck again....

@mrbenz04 - You need to start your own topic otherwise it's a hijack of this thread

@petjelly -
the disk with WME I would assume is (windows ME ) ME is short for millinium, if you have XP BUT can't find the disks you can download either xp for floppy or XP for CD from microsoft and then burn to what ever media,i used the floppy and right cliked on the package i downloaded and opened and it gave instructions automatically (you'll need six floppy's) i assume the CD version is the same,you may be able to get earlier versions of windows the same way

petjelly you'll have to wait for dolphin but to me the blue disks sound like the xp disks ,i can't be sure since my machine did'nt come with them hence the download for floppy grrrrrrrrrr

HOW DO I FIX IT????? anyone know?

On startup the comp runs a detection test of all drives etc ,long before the OS is up and running,hence not a virus problem and is why a previous poster mentioned hardware and offered his services,the fact you can't even get detection in safe mode supports that theory.

petjelly,

The way I see it scorpNZ may be right. However, it seemed to me like we were able to get your machine pretty well clean. There is a possibility that your o/s is corrupt, however, before we take that step I think you should buy this drive. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106013

This is a very good drive for an unbelievable price. I am buying one even though I do not need another! (I already have two!) Buy that drive and let's see what happens. It may not be a driver problem, it may be a hardware problem, and you can't go wrong with a price for a lite-on like that! After you get the drive you will have a fresh copy of Nero and Power DVD-5.

Then check back with us to let us know if it is working. That is your best bet for right now. I don't want you to try to re-install your o/s right now. First I want to see if it is software related or hardware related.

Thanks!

P.S. Sorry I've been away.

@dolphin His highness the Sr. Member!!!

No offence intended before I start this post.

Being a med doc we often do spot diagnosis, reading the first 2 pages of her post I new it?s a corrupt OS?.when AVG detected Trojans worms etc, plus she was going on line with out a fire wall, updates????.

I don?t understand what you guys were & still are trying to achieve???..accept your ignorance for heavens sake at least now??.you still think it?s a hardware issue BUT NO???..what she needs is a proper OS & progies installation with updates?..she doesn?t need no hard drives???what she needs is format & fresh install?..

I have a query??..if I was supposedly a female member would you have taken such non fruitful pains to solve my issues?.??.lol NO again????

repeatedly you guys put her through an ordeal of posting logs which you don?t no a bit about?..yes logs might have helped if some one was a university graduate software specialist?.. Were you & are you trying to impress her??

She has 1 option??.complete format & software installation by some pc store or a house call by a member lol??.

Well one suggests her to buy a new drive, saying he bought 2??.send one to her for trial she shall return back if not needed??.

Regards!

Good luck!!

The decision as to repair by a technician is hers and don't you think petjelly has already thought of that and instead wants to give it a go at repairing herself,there are some of us who prefer to DIY, you have already voiced your opinion in your first post and that for the most part has been ignored and you repeated what you had already stated earlier in your 2nd post with a few smartass comments thrown in to get bites i have no time to spare to humour you any further C.U

@Yezinki

I don't know what your problem is with me. Why do you chose to attack me? Do you want to turn this into a flame thread, I don't. The fact that I'm a Senior Member, while your a Junior, has nothing to do with anything! It only means that I've made more posts than you have here at AfterDawn. And I do take your opening remarks as being a little offensive.

I'll take your points one-by-one.

1> The OS is not infected any more. She has been advised, several times, to get all the updates and a firewall. All we can do is advise, we can't hold her hand and make her.

You imply that your a medical doctor and you make "spot diagnosis", are they always right? Have you ever been wrong? I've known of many doctors that have been. Sometimes, problems are not what they seem to be at first. If you haven't learned that, you should. To add to my above comment, it's like you can't make someone take their medicine. All you can do is advise.

2> It was never suggested she get a new hard drive. I guess you reply without checking things out carefully. The problem has been that her CD writer doesn't read or write disks. She isn't even able to read pressed disks. This is a hardware not OS problem. I haven't told her to buy anything. It was others that suggested that she purchase a new drive.

3> The fact that she is female has nothing to do with it. Yes, I have taken time and more effort with others. It doesn't matter to me if it is a male or female. Why do you even bring something like this up?

4> One doesn't need be a Grad student to be able to read a log file correctly. My experience with computers goes back to the "punch card" days. Can you say that? I've forgotten more than most Grads!

Here again, you bring up gender. What is your problem?

5> Once again,it isn't a software/OS problem.

6> Two writers, not hard drives as you imply. Please read more carefully.

7> I agree with you that Windows Mellinieum is bad. Ever hear of Windows Bob? Worse than Windows ME!
