Yep, I had this problem of the system rebooting when a disk was inserted. I am running XP and did a repair with The XP disk in the drive. Everything was fine, then came up with an ASMS error. Had to put CD-RW as Master disc and disconnect Optorite. It was then able to repair successfully. I put Optorite back as master and CD-RW as slave and upgraded to 216 and not had any problems since.

thanx for the ideas i'll give that a try. i am glad to see i'm not the only one with this issue. james61 you said to set the cd/rw as master does it matter about a dvd rom drive i do have it and the burner on seperate ide cables. i had thought about removing other drives since they are not needed, but i also thought if i leave the cd/rw in for music that is less work/wear/tear on the dvd r/w seems logical am i correct in this thinking kurt

I am using the Optorite DVD burner with Nero 6.0.0.15 and DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5 - firmware version 2.16

I tried burning DVD Video, DVD UDF/ISO and DVD UDF 1.02 as suggested on a number of forums, on Ritek G03 DVD-R media.

The burn is successful and even plays back well on the Optorite. However, it is NOT playing back on ANY other DVD drive on my PC, laptop or standalone DVD player (all of which as known to play DVD-R)

Any suggestions?

That's weird that you are having that problem. I have a new DD0203 and I burn using Nero 6, Record Now Max 4.5, and even DVD Decrypter with now compatibility problems. I use Ritek G03's and Princo's and both work in my standalones and my PC dvd drive. The only thing I can suggest is trying a different media. The cheap Princo's seem to be the most compatible with all the standalones that I/and friends have. They aren't as reliable as the Ritek's(meaning I burn more coasters on the Princo's) but they are the most compatible.

Good luck.

Hi Menaceboy,

I don't know anything about the USB version, perhaps you may need to just unplug it! I've not used that type. As far as repair goes, yes just use the XP repair function. I've not had a crash since I repaired.

Hi Actech,

Hmmm, the reason I stated a CD drive as oppose to a DVD drive, is that a friend had a similar problem, but could not get over the ASAM problem with a DVD of any kind installed. Once repaired, you can put all your drives back to where they were. Hope this helps, Jim.

does anyone reccomend using the optorite for backing up PS2 games and DVDs? I hear that the 2.17 firmware upgrade turns the drive into an expensive paperweight. For the price, I dont think I can pass up this drive. What burning programs work 100%, assuming decent media?

Well I finally got a reply from Optorite on the whole 2.17 issues and I thought I would share with the all the forums who have been talking about it for the last month -

Hi Tom,

2.17 is meant to be for a different DVD-RW drive, and it was uploaded to the website by mistake. By updating to 2.17, it shouldn't have severe effect to your DD0203 drive. You should still be able to operate DD0203, but we strongly recommend flashing it back to 2.16. If there is no longer power going to the drive, or the drive is no longer recognized by BIOS or Windows, it is likely caused by error from the update program, but not the firmware file itself. In that case, please contact your vendor for a replacement drive.

Best regards,
George Chang
OptoRite, Inc.

It doesn't solve anything and most of this we figured out ourselves but I just want to pass on what I received.

I just ordered one of these drives. What version of firmware do these drives ship out with. Do they need to be flashed? Or is this just preference? What is the success rate of the flashes? Do they work good or do some ruin the drives? I know not to get 2.17. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My friend and I both just bought the optorite. Between us so far we have tried these media with 2.16 fw:

4x on Princo 4x media
2.4x on Verbatim 2.4x media

I'm keeping this list as I go of what media is good and not good for this drive since it is picky about what you use. If anyone needs the list let me know, I'm happy to help. This is it so far for my actual use. I have a list of what others have reported, but I've only listed the media so far that I have 1st hand experience with. If you want the full list let me know. It's quit a few but I don't want to give out bad info just in case they don't work, I haven't tried all the different media yet. I'll have the list posted on the web by tonight with a url to them both, my list of media I've used and the other list of media that is said to work by others.

Thanks.

What are you guys using for burning? I used CopyToDVD to burn to a DVD+RW and it worked fine. Then I burned the same files to a Ricoh DVD+R and MCC DVD+R and got coasters. I then tried Nero with the Ricoh DVD+R and it was fine.

This drive seems quite finicky to me.

The drive does seem picky. I doesn't like cheap media. We are using Nero to burn our disc with good success so far.

I just got an optorite 203. $140 delivered. Firmware 2.07
upgraded to 2.16

RANT=on
Even though I've read the the Optorite is a bit firmware
querky, I choose it over the Pioneer 106, and Sony
b500/510. Why? I am no longer paying companies to sell
me crippled hardware, and by this I mean dvd video read
speed. Even if hacked firmware is available for the other
drive, my money is going to businesses that
respect me as a consumer!

With the Optorite I'm pulling video @ 6.1MB/s+ over
firewire.
RANT=off

So far I've used Memorex +RW's. Burnt data and video
fine. Would not read on my laptop or Apex 600 stand
alone. Read fine on a 'creative' dvd-rom. Tried a crapusa
+R and made a coaster. : P BTW doing all on Linux.

I'm getting ready to make a bulk disc purchase and have
some questions.

From what I can gather Ritek's are the all around best -R's
to get, no? Can someone confirm the G03's burn 2x on
the optorite? Can anyone confirm that the G03 and G04's
work fine on stand alones to play video when burnt with
the optorite?

Can anyone recommend a -rw or +rw disc that the
optorite can burn that has good a success rate in stand
alones? Can anyone recommend sub $1 'junk' -R or +R's
that the optorite can burn, and will play on stand alones?

Thanks,
Dave

The Ritek G03's and G04's work great in this drive. 03's burn at 2x and 04's burn at 4x using Nero or dvddecrypter.

Good cheap crap media I have been using are CD Technology(Princo) from supermediastore.com. They burn at 2x and have worked in every standalone I've tried them in.

Mux and Imadern, thanks for your replies.
Supermediastore is where I had planned to order.

I only see 1x and 4x princos there. Imadern, are you
burning the 1x rated discs at 2x, or can you only burn the
4x rated at 2x? Mux what are you using to get 4x??

Imadern, what version firmware are you using?

Have either of you tried Princo's in APEX stand alones?

Thanks again,
Dave

The 1x Princos burn at 2x. And I'm sorry to say but I believe(not 100% sure because I don't remember) that the Princos don't work in Apex standalones. So only buy a few to test out on the Apex before you buy a big bundle.

I tried to make a dvd backup with my optorite and it doesn't work. I used the same software and method and media that have worked before with my standalone. Before I used a different writer, HP300i, but I used dvddecrypter, dvd2one, and nero and verbatim+R 2.4x, all with the same settings that I used with the HP300i. I can write data discs to the verbatim with no problems, and they are readable by other dvdroms, so the media does appear to work with the optorite, and the movie dvd is readable in a computer but not my standalone.
