I'll be flying for about 5 to 6 hours on Monday. I'm taking a few videos with me. I was wondering if I can prolong my battery life on my laptop by installing them on my hard drive now and playing them from there rather then my DVD player?

If you play them on your DVD player, you will be consuming power from the batteries in your DVD player, not your laptop, so I don't quite see the point of your question.

Or more specific.
Hard drive vs. The DVD disc in my laptop.

You mean the DVD player built into your laptop, right? Or do you mean one of those portable DVD players that has a screen and is made just for DVD playback?

GENERATION 98: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and subtract 1 from the generation. Social experiment.

I read some figures elsewhere that a laptop DVD drive was measured at 7 watts while copying data from a DVD-ROM, and most modern laptop hard drives consume around 2-3 watts, so i would say the hard drive is a better choice as far as battery life is concerned.

That's very encouraging. Thanks for the reply. Ever little bit helps on those long flights.

Of course, a flash memory drive would be best of all, since it has no moving parts. You can rip a 90 min movie to DivX at around 6-700 Mb each one and get around 5 on a 4 GB memory stick or 2-3 on a 2 GB one.
