Thanks a lot for your info. One more question though, right now my pc has a x700 in it and I run linux on my pc too. And the better card you posted about was another ATI and right now on ubuntu with the x700 the drivers almost never work/i cant get dual monitors to work. By any chance do you know if the support for that card is any better for ubuntu than the x700?

ati doesnt have very good drivers for linux at the moment but they are opening up thier drivers. so eventualy they will have good support. i would ask that in the linux section because i have never use ati with linux so i dont realy know. but you could get they cheap 8800gt 256mb. nvidia has great linux support. that card is only $30 more and it is a little better than the 3850.

leodirk: The PSU you chose is dump. The one krj recommends will suffice for the 8500GT, but not for anything high end, go with this instead

I CANNOT overstate the importance of having a proper PSU in your PC. Using a cheap and nasty one can cause component damage, and even fire. It does happen, it's happened to several people I know.
I always recommend making the PSU the first priority finance-wise. Settle for a slower PC, but never skimp on the PSU, ever.
Foxconn motherboards are a bit rubbishy. The X2 is also not really the best choice of CPU out there either. I highly recommend this combination

As for the graphics card, nah. Go with at least the 7600 krj suggested. It won't run demanding games like Stalker very well, but it will run them, at least to some degree. If you want something that can run any current game for a reasonable price, get this

As for the RAM, I disagree with krj, 4GB is useful for a gaming build.

thanks sam. i forgot to metion that the psu i recomended will work for the 8500 or the 7600gt but not the 3850 or 8800gt. the psu sam recomended is great, get that if you are considering the 3850 or 8800. also about amd and intel. intel is better for gaming but you wont have any problems with a high clock x2. you just have to decide if you want to pay more for a few fps. and 2 gigs is all that you should need unless you are going to use a 64bit os. a 32bit os can only see 3.5gigs. and the most ram any of my games have uses was 1.2 so i havent had any problems with ram. also sam, the 1.0005 patch for stalker had a nice performance boost. it runs very well at high setting without dynamic lighting or aa.

Either CPU is great for gaming. It's in regular real world applications you'll notice the difference between the two CPUs.

I have a x2 6000+ and it works wonderfully. However, I've never used intel before so I don't have anything to compare it with. I play cs:source, Medal of honor Airborne, Crysis Demo, and many other demanding games and the amd cpu works just fine.

Precisely. In a gaming environment even a 4200+ is sufficient, let alone a 6000+. It's in encoding etc. you'll lose out with the AMD.

None of that really. The architectural design inside core 2 CPUs makes them able to do far more work per clock cycle than AMDs.
