Vista has built in drivers for more hardware than XP does. XP may require you to find a driver off the manufacturer's website.

Also your windows vista is probably a recovery disk which will include ALL the drivers you need. Try finding it on the internet, the emachines site will only have vista drivers.

why use usb cable on the modem as ethernet cable is better & don't need a driver except for the network card.

Hmm, I didn't consider the fact that it might have an ethernet port, hats off for the research. Yeah, use ethernet if you're able.

Did you actually install a network driver when using XP? You'll need one to be able to use the modem over ethernet.

In this case it's not the modem you need the driver for, it's your motherboard chipset. You'll need to find out what motherboard is in your PC and go to the manufacturer's website.

Yep, they may have a separate Network driver, or you may just have to get the whole chipset driver package.

That's the integrated graphics driver, required to get decent video performance.

i think i know what the problem is. if not using a router but just a modem whether the motorola or cm550, you have to do an ipconfig release even switching from vista to xp or back. another way of doing that is to disconnect the power & coax cables to the modem, count to 20 & reconnect the power & coax cable in that order. i do that all the time & it works.
