Does anyone know why when you buy a new dvd movie there is no sign that a movie has been burned to the disc, yet when you burn a movie yourself you can actually see the markings of the burn?

The commercial disk is created by a stamping process. The data on the new disk can be read by the laser in the DVD drive.
Your disk is coated with a dye that is burned as the device records the data. The unburned area at the edge of the disk stands out in contrast to the burned area.

You are comparing two different processes, apples and oranges.

ATTAR, Thanks for your easy to understand explanation unlike BILBO65'S answer that told me nothing except, i guess, that disc's are made from processed apples and oranges!!!

I guess some analogies just fly over the greymatter. Simply put, you can not compare commercial production methocs to home brew methods, i.e., apples and oranges.....

Greymatter asked for an answer, not an analogy and I think attar summed it up pretty well.

I believe Greymatter was not trying to make a comparison of apples to oranges, but as to WHY they are apples and oranges and not all apples or oranges.
BTW, I think LOCOENG said it well in his last post.

In the direction you're headed the best course would be

Not neccessarily, but a few more steps "North by Northwest" and one might find themselves in a strange and snowy wardrobe that may or may not contain a Lion and a Witch.

With Lions and Witches and maybe even bears, perhaps the chronicles would suggest I should bring my "subtle knife".
