I recently bought a Asus DVD-RW burner, model #DRW-2014L1T. Here is my lengthy yet detailed description as to whats going on. Its a SATA drive. It worked. I was able to copy The Nightmare Before Christmas onto my desktop using "DVD Shrink" (a free program), and then proceed to backup (burn) a new copy of the movie onto a blank DVD using the burner. It worked great, and I could watch the movie on my DVD player.. I tried the same process with another movie, Easy Rider, the movie was ripped onto my desktop using DVD shrink, but when I tried to burn the DVD, it gets to 99% and then errors. It does this when I burn as a ISO image, or as just regular DVD files & folders...

I had Vista for about 2 weeks with this new drive. Thinking maybe it was a problem because Vista ran so crappie, I proceeded to do a FULL format and reinstall XP...

heres where it gets weird...

I installed XP with no problem.. Installed DVD Shrink with no problem. I installed Nero with no problem. The Asus DVD drive is found in my device manager and the driver is current and updated. The firmware is current. I have another DVD-ROM drive (also Asus) and it is seen and working correctly in Device Manager as well.. I am also using a Asus motherboard as well..

The DVD-ROM drive can load and play DVDs. The DVD-RW drive can load and play CDs and CD-ROMs (games) but not DVDs or DVD-Rs!!!

It is in BIOs correctly, and I think I've done everything right..

Why would this drive work, and then out of nowhere not support DVD playback / burning??

When I put a DVD or a blank DVD in, the drive sounds like its searching and making some progress, but it does this for 25+ mins...

What is going on with this thing??? I have more faith in Asus!!

Thanks all to help =)

Go into Device Manger, and unintall the troubled burner. Reboot, and see if the problem clears up. If not, it may have gone south on you.

Life is good!
