I have 2 DVD drives hooked up to my computer right now. One rips real fast, and the other takes about twice as long. It's something to do with the master/slave or DMA setting... but when it comes to this stuff I am a bit lost, and anything I look up on DMA settings, assumes you already possess related knowledge, so it is useless to me.

Can someone dumb it down for me and help me through fixing this? I need to use the one drive as the other does not booktype.

PS - I am using Vista (not by choice)

Thanks very much!!

Thanks very much for the link. I checked, and DMA is enabled already. I don't know what's going on.

I do know that the slow drive is connected to the motherboard using one of the older wide (approx. 2") flat grey cables, and the newer faster one is connected with one of those new orange cables that kind of looks like a thick telephone cord. Is the one a higher speed connection? Is there anything special I need to do if I am mixing these two different connection types on two seperate DVD drives?

Or could it be that I don't have the proper jumper settings for the slave and master?

This is so frustrating.

You have a SATA drive (the thin flat cable)and a traditional ATA drive.
SATA doesn't have a master/slave setting setup.
The other drive on the grey cable, assuming that it's the only device on that cable, should be on the end connector and set either as master or CS (cable select).
If you have Nero, use Nero Info Tool to find out the drive setup.
If you don't have Nero, download the tool here:

Check the drive 'configuration' tab and the 'drive' tab.

I've had that happen (slow ripping) to me too. On the SAME drive that used to rip fast. Happens once in awhile, not sure why. Some DVDs rip at 10X read, but sometimes it'll just crawl along at like 2X for others. (no scratches/junk on the dvds) Dunno why. More of just an inconvenience than anything.
