There seem to be a few SNES emulators for the PSP, and I was wondering what you guys think is the best one in terms of performance and compatibility? I downloaded one called "snes9xTYL" a short while ago and the video performance was... less than satisfactory (B.A.D!).

I don't see how that one is bad. I use it and it's really good. Many others use this as well. There may be another better one (that I have yet to discover) but snes9xTYL will work better then well!

I use the samw emulator. I have noticed that some games dont run to well though. I am a big Super Metroid fan and cant seem to get Samus to not disappear at times.

Maybe it was just the ROM I downloaded then. Well, I'll try installing it again and see if I have better luck. Still, if anybody knows of any others, please let me know.

Yeah i've tried snes9xTYL ME and found that the sound was really crappy (slim 3.71 m33-4)lots of little clicks and pops.
also during secret of mana the sound seems to lag and slow down at points.
I'm trying to find out if anyone else has sound issues with it as well, because other than that its been pretty sweet.
i'll look into samw as an alternative in the mean time.
I hope it gets a new release soon though cause it is a very well made emulator.
in fact does anyone know is snes9xTYL has a dev forum/site?
edit* heh found it, should know better than to doubt google.

Ok, I meant same not 'samw'. Dont go looking for any SNES emulator called 'samw' as you probably wont get anywhere. I will test out my Secret of Mana and see if I have any problems also.

I am on a fat 3.71 M33-3. However, if the rom has no problems on mine, then I can assist you in replacing yours to see if that will work for you.

Yeah worth a try cheers :)
however i have tried many many different version and so far its always been there.
But it would be a good way of testing if this is a slim only problem. I'm new to the psp scene but from what i've read the snes9xTYL 0.4.2 ME port to slim is pretty new, so maybe its a bug in the port...
PS:
i also get it in mario all stars lots of noise crackles in the start up menue.
EDIT*
Ok i might have fixed it..maybe, needs testing.
But i put frame skip on 1 and lowered sound quality and it seems to be coping much better, still there a little bit. when i get home and can load my other roms i'll check them out too.
but if you could test it on the fat that'd be great for comparisson :)
EDIT#2*
ok done a bit more testing and it seems putting frame skip on 1, lowering sound quality fixes the problem :D

Alright, I've given your solution a try and it seems to work well for most of my SNES games. It reduces crackling dramatically, but not completely, but good enough. Although, in what seems to be all games, I get a hum-like sound in the left channel / speaker. Oh well, at least it isn't constantly crackling now. :)

Yeah its not perfect but it does at least make the games playable :)
I'm hoping that in the future releases they'll fix the sound problems.
Its strange that this isn't mentioned more, nowhere else have i found any discussion about the crackling, would be good to hear from a fat owner if they get it too, cause if they don't it might explain why its not a more prevalent issue..
as for the hum, thats odd,i dont think i get that :/ do you get it with headphones on?
Maybe try playing with the rendering (psp accel/software approx etc) i've made a few games perform better by having them render differently.

Well, the humming was present in both the headphone AND the PSP speaker, but as far as I remember, I think it only happened in one game. As for the rendering, I'll give it a try. The video issue I mentioned was mainly from Super Metroid. Paths behind some moving objects (which I assume is supposed to be some sort of motion blur or particle effect) in sequences like Samus's ship flying and the Taradactil flying through the room were shown as black shapes which overlayed everything. Not very nice to look at...

For me everything works fine with SNESTYL emulator. Only problem is my FPS drops all the way down to 5-10 with games like Star Fox, Mariokart, and Mario RPG. It seems like it can't handle those games very well.
