The last two batches of Tayo Yuden 8X blanks are giving me a 30% failure rate. I've been using the standard blanks for 5 years and now all of a sudeen I'm having problems. Has this company been going south recently? Any suggestions? They are authentic Tayo Yudens.

What program are you using to burn? Any log you can post?
How about the make and model of the burner?

DVD Identifier says they are authentic and 8X. I'm using a liton burner. Same one for the last 4 or 5 years. I just did a copy of The Simpsons and it failed at about the 40 second mark. I tried another disc from the same batch and it copied fine. I have two different stacks of 100 open and both have a high but not total failure rate. At least 50%. Does Tayo Yuden make different grades of blank? This is the budget packs like I have always used in the past.

You are using the Value packs and I would recommend that you try the premium TYs. Also your burner may be starting to fail.

I have always wondered if there is a real difference between the value pack and so called premium blanks. Can anybody say with certainty what those differences may be? Is it really likely that my burner is wearing out? I've actually never heard of a burner wearing out. Is Tayo Yuden still the best brand? I've used Riteks in the past.

Anything with "Value" in the discription is generally of lesser quality and will meet lesser specfications than a "premium" line.
DVD writers do fail. Fortunally not too often but will with use and those of lesser quality will fail sooner.
Tys, if not the best are certianly one of the two or three best, IMHO.

4 to 5 years is pretty old in burners years so that may be more of your problem then the disc themselves - esp since you've been using the same value line discs for awhile now.

Agree. Though burners don't fail too terribly often, it does occur. During that 4 or 5 years have you burned a lot? It's a definite possibility that the burner is taking a ride south.

Again, it could just need to be cleaned, cables reset, etc.

Again???
@inazsully
From bilbo65's last post - cleaning it is a good suggestion. Use a dvd lens cleaner or blow some canned air in the drive.
If you do have a burn log that could be helpful in figuring it out.

A "southernism" meaning re-visiting an issue that has been under discussion. Sometimes drawn out as ..Then again, it might be.... :-)

I guess since I'm not a southerner that meaning is lost on me.
Sure it may be 'revisiting' a discussion in the dvd forums as a whole but I take take it literally - like this thread only.

It did and does apply to this thread. Perhaps one could also say "but also it might be"... or "another possibility is that it might be"....etc, etc, etc....
