My dvd burner stopped burning and reading disc HELP!!!!

i got a lg-gsa-4167b double layer burner thats been working fine all year but all of a sudden it doesn't read or write any disc. I recently did a disc defragment and downloaded new codec paks and thats when I think the problem started. I also updated the firmware. here's the nero infotool if anybody can help i would appreciate it muchly. thanks

REINSTALL DRIVEs DRIVERS
it suggested you boot into safe mode when uninstalling any driver.
mycomputer> right click> properties> hardware tab> device manager> then under the tab CR-ROM/DVD-ROM DEVICES (names will differ), right click on the drive and select the option to uninstall it>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> then restart your computer and once you've logged in windows, it will prompt you install the driver for the drive, if not go to the control panel>printers and other hardware> add hardware, then go back into the device manager and select the option "scan for changes" -err something along that line
post back with questions results, anything!!!

sorry about the double post when i tried to submit it the 1st time an error message came up. The problem happened awhile ago and I updated my firmware and that seemed to fix the problem for a couple days and then it continued to mess up. I totally uninstalled the drive and then re-installed it but it seems to do the same thing. It will play audio cds but when I try to play or burn dvds it doesn't read or write them. The only thing I did that may have caused the problem was a disk defragment and I recently uploaded more codecs called k-lite codec pak and then when the problem stated to occur I uninstalled those codecs and then loaded the xp codec pak. My os is windows xp 2002 service pack 2 home edition. any clues on what can be causing this malfunction?

i doubt it has anything to do the with codec install, this could why your drive playing audio file though, try installing your original firmware,
all of this may have been a coincidence, crack open your tower and check to make sure your IED/ATA/SATA cables are firmly connected to your drives and there is no dust build up
check to see if the firmware you installed was the official release and that it supports dvds, you might have installed a firmware with dumbed down capability's,
once again a restore point may fix the corrupted registries

it seems that nothing worked i bought a new dvd burner thinking there was a problem with the original burner and now for some reason this one won't burn either. Can it be something in the os that I can repair?

alright im just going to make sure, you installed the drivers for this
drive correct??
nero/burning software isn't set to the wrong drive?
example: my burner is drive D:, my non-burning drive is E:, make sure your software has D: set to burn
have you been trying to burn with the same spiral?
it could be that that spiral contains doggy disc's (discs ruined from the factory), try burning with a new batch of discs
now that the issue has spanned over two drives it leads me to believe that the source is either coming from the OS or faulty connection
make sure both the power connect and your data connection wires(ATA/SATA) are connected firmly to the mother board and the USPS (THE GENERAL POWER UNIT, basically)

this is a list of your drives supported media types, you aren't trying
to burn to an unsupported media, correct?
uninstall nero(with the nero removal tool, click me(,,) and try burning using windows
put in a CD-R, go my computer double click to open your burning drive, and drag and drop a file or two to the window, in the upper left hand corner there is an option, burn files to cd, select that option
download img burner and try burning with that
use this to further trouble shoot issues within the device manager

I tried everything I even rebooted my computer back to scratch and installed my new dvd burner and still its messed up. it will burn and play cds and it will play dvds but when I burn dvds it will play for a second on my dvd player and then freeze, play and then freeze again. the dvds that i burn won't even pull up on my computer. I also took tripplites advice and tried to delete the upper and lower filters registry but my computer didn't detect either so right now I don't know what to do. if anybody can help me please let me know. thanks

I'd try different media, first. If that doesn't fix it, then I would try a different ribbon cable. If those don't work, then a format C: may be in order.

the issues you are reporting to me now is much different then when it first started, try different dvd creation software like
