Ok, so a couple of years ago I bought a boxing DVD career set on eBay and got all 12 DVD's without any problems with them.

But something weird happened to only 1 of the 12 DVD's.

This is the screen my DVD-VCR displays when its on DVD mode: http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/9660/pic0023ev1.jpg

Somehow that image got "burnt" onto one of my DVD's and it became that DVD's menu background: http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/2716/pic0024yh6.jpg

How the heck did that happen? That wasnt the DVD menu background image when I first got it.

When you play the DVD on your computer, is the menu display the same for that DVD, with that blue Philips background?

Yes it is.

Is there even an explanation for this? I've never heard of this ever happening.

Question... seeing that this is a Philips brand unit, is this a Philips DVD-Recorder? Obviously, if it is not, then there is NO way that your player added a menu background to the disc. I would start to presume other things at that point: coincidentally (and forgetfully on your part) 1 of the 12 discs was authored with that as a background; you or someone else re-recorded the original disc as a streaming output (and also forgot 'yeah I did make a set of copies manually' so this isn't a true menu but a recording of a menu); or you didn't really play this disc on different player or possibly you are using a Philips player in your PC too and it's default menu output is the exact same as your standalone.

I could easily see that a set of Ebay recordings would be on DVD-R's and might not have been authored and finalized completely, so I would view this situation as a happenstance / glitch if you have a Philips recorder. But my first presumption would be to look at the user that has handled the discs since you received them. Ockham's razor usually applies. (Look it up if you don't know the reference.)
